We Really Wish This Sci-Fi Air Show Existed In This Reality

Airshows are always really awesome to visit, but what if you could walk up to your favorite science fiction spacecraft? That's the aim of the Sci-Fi Air Show, a digital project that puts fictional spacecraft on display.



Sadly, these aren't actually real-world props on display for one weekend a year: they're miniatures mashed up with real-world imagery:

The images you see here on the site are photographs of practical miniature spaceships digitally blended with actual air show backgrounds. It is a fantasy air show that only exists on line, but appeals to many of us who, at one time, believed that these ships of fantasy really could fly.

Still, it's a really cool project, and a neat way to think about some of the ships that you see out and about on your television screen. Somewhere, the Empire, Pan Am or the Colonial Fleet put on their own spaceshows for the general public.

The first column consists of a shuttle and Vipers from the original BattleStar GALACTICA (ABC 1978 - 1979).

Across the top is the Flying Sub from Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea (ABC 1964 - 1968), the Spindrift from Land Of The Giants (ABC 1968 - 1970), the Orion space shuttle from 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and the spacecraft from Planet Of The Apes (1968), Beneath The Planet Of The Apes (1970) and Planet Of The Apes (CBS 1974) TV series. [This is mistakenly named the Liberty 2 Lander, but in the movies and TV series they were not given names.]

Beneath the Flying Sub and the Spindrift are Eagle 4 and a Mark 9 Hawk from Space: 1999 (ITV 1975 - 1977). [The second season of Space: 1999, being somewhat inferior, is sometimes called Space:1999 — Marked Down From 2001 by the fans!]

Beneath and between the Orion and the Planet Of The Apes ship is the Jupiter II from Lost In Space (CBS 1965 - 1968).

Beneath them is the Eagle boneyard.

Great designs here of these various ships.

Even if they were from inferior sf TV shows.

Always loved the Flying Sub, Eagles, & Vipers & Shuttle.

However, none of the series they appeared on were well written sf shows.

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea did have some good episodes during its black & white first season. Then it became a monster or alien of the week show.

Space: 1999 attempted some decent shows with thoughtfulness & intelligence but somehow never managed to pull it all together with action & adventure & make it all work.

Imagine a fun movie about the Sci-Fi Air Show, in which the happy attendees are suddenly shocked by the appearance of an invading fleet of alien spacecraft!

The people in charge of the Sci-Fi Air Show would round up the guests who had piloting experience and explain that all the ships on display were fully functional, right down to the weapons!

The volunteer pilots (devoted science fiction fans, on and all) would defend the Earth against the invaders by using spacecraft from classic TV shows and movies!
