Again the brilliant Mr. Bogdan presents us with a review at least as enjoyable as the movie it addresses, this time a somewhat disappointing "Lost World" story which falls a bit short of movies like The Land Unknown, or even Irwin Allen's The Lost World.

I have fond memories of watching a VHS tape of this movie for the first time with friends on a summer evening at a friend's house in the 1990s after a backyard cookout.

It was a night of grilled burgers and spirited conversation around the backyard grill before we took our food into the living room and balanced our plates in our laps (some on the sofa, others on the floor), while we watched one of the last 1950s sci-fi movies we hadn't seen many times in the past.

Most of us had grown in up in the 50s or 60s, so we were eager to see anything we'd missed in all the years since then.

This one was enjoyable in spite of its shortcomings.

And the introduction by Dr. Frank Baxter was a real treat. People my age remember his Bell Telephone science specials, which were shown in our science classes in high school!

IMDB has several interesting trivia items for this production.

~ The humps for the mole people were done by stuffing the backs of the actors who played them with newspapers.

Note from me: I get a funny mental image of the actors playing the mole people sitting around between takes, reading wrinkled newspapers they've pulled out of each other's humps!

~ In the original ending, Dr. Bentley and Adad lived happily ever after. The studio, reluctant to imply an interracial relationship, insisted on a new ending two weeks after filming ended.

Note from me: My, have times have changed. Things like interracial relationships are no long considered "wrong".

But the real question is, why did the studio think that John Agar's character and Cynthia Patrick's character should be considered and "interracial relationship"?

After all, John Agar's character is white, and Cynthia Patrick's character is even whiter because she was a member of the albino underground folks!
