Icons of Sci-Fi : Toho Collection is a DVD of 3 classic Japanese sci-fi films and is available this week (today, in fact).
The films are:
Mothra, The H-Man and Battle in Outer Space. These were previously available only as DVD-Rs or on VHS. See it here, on Amazon.com

In my opinion, the best of the three is 'The H-Man'. A rather atmospheric movie...not badly dubbed at all (though I find it a bit amusing that the dubbing is nice and clear but with a fake Japanese accent for all the characters).
'Battle in Outer Space' has some nice effects but as a kid, I remember that the scene we all loved to see was when the moonships pass the wreckage of the earlier destroyed space station, the effects include a couple of bodies that fly past along with the debris. We just thought that was SOOOOO cool!!! |

The current price on Amazon is under $10, which seems like a pretty good deal. _________________ ____________

In my opinion, Battle in Outer Space is the best of the three and easily worth $10.
I have owned this collection for a few years and the case for the three DVDS is very odd; they are stacked one one another like sliced cheese.

I've recently watch a few of the Kaiju movies, attempting to find one I really liked — without much luck.
However, I agree that Battle in Outer Space is the best of the Japanese science fiction movies.
I'll bet the Monsterkids in the 1960s loved it!

Yeah, Kaiju movies are either a "Like 'em or leave 'em" genre of films, especially those from the 50's & 60's.
I really don't think they would be classified as Sci-Fi either...even though most seem to have an atomic bomb/radiation element that are responsible for the monsters.
Maybe fantasy or lite horror? _________________ "You look like a pooped out pinwheel."

Good point.
All Sci-Fi tends to include movies that aren't strictly science fiction, just because people who enjoy that genre also include the quasi sci-fi ones as well.
When we were kids we didn't have a strict definition of science fiction, so we enjoyed stories that had the "look" of sci-fi, and that nurtured our life-long love for the genre.
But the movies which definitely fit into the fantasy category are in the "Movies in Other Genre" forum, just to keep us moderately true to the name All Sci-Fi.
After all, Mostly Sci-Fi just doesn't have the same ring to it. And it wouldn't look as cool our official T-shirts.

Well put. As kids, anything to do with space or rocketships or even the future were considered sci-fi, even some of those more horror-based because they dealt with the fantastical.
Nowadays, there seems to be strict "guidelines" as to what is considered Sci-Fi, but those that fall outside of the category, like those other films, is what indeed crafted us as Monster Kids and shaped our love for the movies showcased here on All Sci-Fi. _________________ "You look like a pooped out pinwheel."

Wade, I have never seen that concept more concisely stated hre on All Sci-Fi!
As you stated so well, we're dedicated to the imaginative literature, comics, serials, movies, and TV shows which seduced our imaginations in the days of our wildly enthusiastic youths! _________________ ____________
