Night Gallery was a horror anthology television series that ran on NBC from December 16, 1970 until May 27, 1973 for 43 episodes, 93 individual segments. Each episode was usually comprised of several different segments running at different lengths.
Each show opened with Rod Serling as the host. RS would act as the curator of an art museum with stunning paintings (by Thomas J. Wright and Jaroslas "Jerry" Geber) that represented a specific segment in some manner.
MBC defined the series as "action, ghouls and gore."
Some H.P. Lovecraft stories were adapted for the segments. Rod Serling also wrote a number of scripts for the series. However, Rod did not serve as a producer on the series as he did on his iconic Twilight Zone show.
Jack Laird was the producer. He saw the show just as NBC had described it: a horror series. Rod wanted to inject in his scripting, social commentary just as he'd done on The Twilight Zone. Laird was often opposed to that and would reject Rod's work on occasion. This caused tensions between the two men.
Rod's script "They're Tearing Down Tim Riley's Bar" was filmed and is considered one of the best episodes of Night Gallery. Serling himself felt that it was one of the finest things he had written, even over his numerous scripts for The Twilight Zone. |
