Commander Straker has a Wall Display screen behind his desk. It had ribbons of different colors that gently moved around. It was a nifty looking effect, but I wondered if it had any practical purpose at all? Turns out it did.

This wall features various screens for displaying data, while also showing a small scale model displaying the Moon's current location relative to the Earth. The map screen can be cleared to be used as a whiteboard. S.H.A.D.O. Technical Operations Manual.

The colors were apparently an early version of today's screen saver we have on computers. I'm not sure if any episodes featured the Wall Display being utilized for any of the functions listed here.

In the episode "Court-martial" we find out it's true purpose.
Or at least a designed in secondary purpose.

Its an emergency escape route.

The Gerry Anderson YouTube page just a few days ago posted a video titled From Earth to the Moon | Making of UFO Documentary. Click the title to view it.
