Since the sad and untimely passing of Bruce Cook a month ago, there has been virtually no activity on All Sci-Fi.
Bruce was the lifeblood of this board. He was its co-creator, host and moderator. He made more posts and started more threads than the rest of us put together. He nursed the board through several near-deaths and resurrections.
I think the question we need to ask ourselves now is, does All Sci-Fi have a future? Can the board continue at all without Bruce at the helm? And if it does, who will pony up the annual server fee to keep the board online? |

I am 100% saddened to hear of the passing of Bruce.
I had known Bruce for many, many years, first meeting him on the Classic Horror Film Board. It was at that time he talked of starting All Sci-Fi, and I was honored to be one of the first Administrators and Moderators back when All Sci-Fi was launched.
We quite often enjoyed watching scifi movies together via what he dubbed "Syncro-Cinema", whereas we would be chatting on Skype while syncing DVD's and therefore watching movies together.
Bruce had even sent me a few recorded DVD's so we could watch together.
Bruce worked tirelessly to launch and promote All Sci-Fi, and bring it back to life after more than a few changes in server hostings.
Unfortunately, he and I had a falling out in the early days, and our relationship became estranged for a few years.
We reconciled after a bit, but I had not journied back to All Sci-Fi until recently.
We were once again building our early friendship, and throughout all the years, Bruce was a posting monster, and certainly was the lifeblood of All Sci-Fi.
I think it would be a great tribute to Bruce to keep All Sci-Fi alive as best as we can.
Does anyone know the hosting cost(s) and to whom we would remit payment(s)?
Safe travels through the cosmos my friend. _________________ "You look like a pooped out pinwheel."

I'm guessing Bruce would like this board to continue in his memory. While I did not know him personally his love for this forum was evident in his postings.
Rest in peace Bruce, our science fiction brother.
I think I'll go watch Forbidden Planet in his memory.
I think he would like that. |

I think everyone is used to replying to Bruce and so that sort of knocked the wind out of it, and it's especially noticeable because people are busy around the end of the year.
I work for the Internet Archive and I was just looking at the Wayback Machine to see how much of the site is preserved there, just in case. You can see the backup here (link). _________________ * * *

It's been two weeks and there's not been a single post. I wonder if people have stopped engaging because they think the board might be shutting down. _________________ * * *

Yah,
I've made a few posts in the last month with no replies.
It's sad, but I fear the end of the forum is coming. |

It would be nice to know if anyone's inherited the account info or not. I worry that hosting bills aren't going to be paid and that will be the end of it. _________________ * * *

I know Bruce had a heck of a time getting the board put in his name when Randy's son sabotaged the last board. (Randy was the "owner" of the domain on the previous server.)
There may be a problem with arranging to take over the payment. I'd be glad to contribute to it if we could get a few of us "old timers" to join in. I have no idea however who the "server" is and how and when it's billed.
Bruce was a master of finding something new to spur postings. I wish somehow Bruce would post..."Fooled you! As Mark Twain wrote 'The rumors of my passing has been grossly exaggerated!"
Alas, that is not going to happen. _________________ There comes a time, thief, when gold loses its lustre, and the gems cease to sparkle, and the throne room becomes a prison; and all that is left is a father's love for his child. |

Of course, minus credentials, I dunno how to even start figuring out if it's possible to transfer ownership. And though it was his baby, I wonder if his family even has the necessary info. _________________ * * *

I have no idea how much a forum costs to run.
Are we talking hundreds of $$, thousands of $$?
As Gord said I would consider contributing something to help
keep the boards open. |

I hope I'm wrong, but my guess is no.
If so I would think they would have come forward.
I'm not sure what that means for the future of the site. |
