_____
Exciting, highly-regarded thriller about a deranged scientist (Richard Basehart of TV's "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea") who steals a sample of a highly virulent organism from a government research lab and plans to wipe out Los Angles with it.
He uses a small Florida town as a test model; scratch one small Florida town. Government agent George Maharis ("Route 66", "The Sword and the Sorcerer") tries to track him down and recover the sample, aided by Anne Francis ("Forbidden Planet").
Director John Sturges does an excellent job with the screenplay by James Clavell and Edward Anhalt. Also starring Dana Andrews, Edward Asner, Frank Sutton, John Anderson, Russ Bender, Simon Oakland, John Larkin, Henry Beckman. _________________ ____________

I remember being favorably impressed by The Satan Bug when it was newly released. But then, I was a teenager at the time, so what did I know? ("Everything", actually. ) _________________ ...or not...

IMDB has several interesting trivia items for this production.
________________________________
~ In the scene in the jazz club where Lee Barrett is introduced, the waitress that tells him he has a phone call is played by Lee Remick in an uncredited cameo role.
Note from me: Miss Remick is one of the loveliest ladies is Hollywood history. Even is her brief role as a baton-twirling teenager in A Face in the Crowd with Andy Griffith, she was a showstopper. :winker:
~ Anne Francis replaced Joan Hackett.
Note from me: Miss Francis is always a welcome face in any movie.
~ John Sturges wanted a gigantic climax on the Los Angeles freeway, with the population trying to evacuate the city before the plague begins. Sturges wanted something exciting, huge, with thousands of cars glued into a behemoth traffic jam. But the mayor and city hall of LA refused. Sturges was livid and felt great grief because of this.
Note from me: Ah, poor baby. He wasn't permitted to close down one the largest and busiest expressways in the world for what probably would have been a full day . . . at least. _________________ ____________
