I've had that happen to me many times. Memory is not a "recording" of what we see and hear, it's an emotional "reaction" to it.

I guess perhaps your mind was pondering the fact that most men who were millions of miles from Earth and separated from their loved ones for years actually would have an emotional reaction to a birthday message like that.

So, if you or I were in that situation, we'd have trouble getting through the message. And for that reason, your "memory" reflected the reaction you'd have to the situation Frank was in.

When I was composing all these recent comments for our discussions, I had to watch and rewatch the relevant scenes several times to make sure I was describing them accurately. And yet I often caught myself making mistakes when describing a scene I'd just watched . . . and then catching the error when I looked at it again to check it!

Bud, your response above reflects EXACTLY what Kubrcik intended! 2001ASO was a COMPOSITION! An amalgam of sights and sound to elicit an emotional response in the viewer.

The music was chosen and used perfectly. The music background in the opening scene showing the Discovery was of such lonlyness and isolation reflecting the fact that these astonauts were alone in space millions of miles from their home. The breathing sounds etc highlighited the terror and set up an emotional response in the viewer even though the on screen characters expressed no physical emotions otherwise.

Need I say it? Kubrick created a visual/audio tone poem that is still relevant 50 years after its' premier.

Gord, don't forget the hiss of the air with the breathing. They were actually feeding air into the helmet through the airline. The LS packs had an airline connected to the bottom of the pack. So the Actors were really getting their air from the pack.

Makes you wonder if the hiss of the air and breathing was recorded from the helmet. My understanding is that they used an intercom connection to talk to the actors while wearing the helmets.

Just based on a general knowledge about movie making, I'd say the sound man experimented with a few different ways to make a breathing sound he thought was good, and then Kubrick chose the one he liked.

Remember, in Hollywood even the sounds of skilled tap dancers is post-dubbed by (in some cases) OTHER skilled tap dancers on a wooden platform in the sound studio!

I got a kick out of Gary Lockwood telling this story from a few years back.

He was attending one of those personal appearances shows where the actors sit at tables and greet their fans.

He noticed that there was an actor nearby him at another table and grumbling about Gary. This disgruntled actor commented sarcastically the Gary ONLY made one movie.

Gary responded with "Yeah, it was called 2001, what was your movie?"

Of course, Gary made more movies than 2001. He played an outlaw in the western film Firecreek with James Stewart & Henry Fonda.

Listening to the interview with Gary, I'm thinking that that other actor who made the derogative remark might just count his lucky stars that Gary didn't get riled up.

Lockwood says that he was a wild kinda guy in his earlier years. He had been an athlete and stuntman before transitioning into acting.

He said he had his good share of bar fights. He took nothing from other people although he did not start the battles. Fought tough stuntmen and anyone else that wanted to mess with him.

Once, a noted karate champ got after Gary at a restaurant and Lockwood cleaned this guy's clock.

He said that this rough and tough reputation alienated other actors from wanting to work with him, and probably cost him acting jobs along the way.

He said no one needed to be frightened of him as he really didn't look for trouble. However, if you yanked his chain he was going to come back at you with everything he had.

Gary Lockwood has done quite a few interviews both solo and with Kier . He impresses me as someone I would not want to aggrevate in a bar or saloon!

Still... The perfect casting by Kubrick!

And ole' Garry managed to accrue two more SF credits to his resume.

The second Star Trek pilot "Where No Man Has Gone Before" just before 2001, and the television SF movie/pilot Earth II.

Until that interview I never realized he was quite the tough guy brawler in Hollywood.

Back in 2018 while visiting the Air and Space Museum in DC I got to tour "The Barmecide Feast". A recreation (sort of) of Dave Bowman's "hotel room" at the end of 2001 ASO.

Tickets were sold for a 5 minute visit. If I remember, only 5 people were allowed in at a time. These are the photos I took.
