After "it" consumes (blob like) the fishermen (at the end of the movie) it falls overboard. Mars did not have any salt water. While the creature had amazing survival attributes it was ill prepared to cope with salt water. Survival in salt water was not part of its evolutionary repertoire and consequently exposure was tantamount to acid (alien nation). Also this explains why the organism, traveling on meteorites from Mars, could never flourish, since there was a high probability of landing in salt water. Humanity continues. My optimistic take. |

Great job of analyzing the situation, Maurice!
The clip below shows the ending of the movie, and it doesn't seem to include the alien absorbing the fisherman or falling into the ocean. The fisherman open the hatch while the poor astronaut (completely engulf accept for the middle portion of his face) desperately screams at the fisher, trying to stop them from opening the hatch . . . which they do anyway.
It immediately cuts to the very last shot, a view from high overhead, and it shows two more boats closing in on the floating capsule. So, the alien will have lots of folks to gobble up.
I wish this movie actually did have a more optimistic ending — at least one which allowed the man and woman heroes to survive and become part of a sequel in which mankind fights this extremely interesting monster. _________________ ____________
