That's the best way to deal with all so-called "vice," whether it's booze, drugs, gambling or prostitution. Legalize it, regulate it and tax it. You're never going to make it go away. |
Except it doesn't work hat way. When the government taxes and tries to regulate something, then organized crime moves in to circumvent the taxes and regulation. Two examples are alcohol and tobacco. Bot are taxed and for both there is a thriving black market worth millions a year. It does make work for the Feds though.
A more modern example is marijuana. It was once illegal in all 50 states, and organized crime made millions, if not billions of dollars. Now marijuana is legal in most states, but it has not stopped organized crime from continuing to sell it illegally because of the regulations and taxes. They're still raking in millions of dollars. People don't like the restrictions, and they definitely don't like paying the high government dictated prices.
But to say that something should be made legal, because people are going to do it anyway makes no sense. People rob, steal, kidnap and murder, all of which is illegal. Should they be made legal because people are going to do it anyway?

Gord, you're right, of course.
But why arrest the victims of the cruel acts you described (the prostitutes) instead of just the people committing the acts (the pimps and the sex traffickers)?
Arresting prostitutes doesn't discourage the people who are victimizing the women. I realize that prostitution is a misdemeaner while pimping is a felony, but I don't see why prostitution should even be against the law.
If a woman is free to choose an abortion because "it's her body", why can't she choose to sell sexual services to adults? _________________ ____________
