How about this movie going another way? The deadly planetoid that they manage to destroy from crashing into the Earth is now only partially destroyed. They have prevented it from destroying the Earth, and Pacifica itself. However, the remnants of the planetoid have still severely impacted the surface. Now Pacifica is crucial in aiding the surviving nations in the rebuilding and restoring the world. |

Great ideas!
As I read the sentence below, I immediately had another concept spring up, one that differs from all the doomsday scenarios about a polluted Earth and global epidemics!

The deadly planetoid that they manage to destroy from crashing into the Earth is now only partially destroyed.

What if the planetoid broke into several large fragments which went into orbit around the Earth. The fragments would be closer than the Moon, and mankind realizes that they can be mined for minerals much more easily than the distant asteroids.
And when exploratory missions land on these fragments, they discover several fabulous new metals — some of which have remarkable hardness, while others have high conductivity, etc.
Suddenly these planetoid fragments inspire a new "Gold Rush", as nations quickly send mining crews to reap the rewards of this new resource! When various nations try to lay claim to specific fragment, mankind realizes that fighting over the fragments would be a huge mistake in view of the new wealth and prosperity we could enjoy if we work together.
A new story arc could emerge later in which a coalition of mining operations unite to declare that the planetoid fragments are a new "nation". They argue that they will keep the peace and deal fairly all the countries on Earth, insuring a fair distribution of the wealth which the planetoid offers.
Naturally there would be countries who objected to this idea and threatened to conquor this new "Nation in Space" — a Space Nation composed of "space stations", so to speak.
But the fact that the the Space Nation can launch missiles at at any country who threatens them would be both a powerful deterrent AND a frightening advantage for any Earth-bound country who succeeded in taking over!
