Yeah...I always felt sorry "real astronaut" Bill Dana. It was an unfortunate coincidence. |

God, it would be so EASY to add arms and legs to this thing! It's the perfect robot torso. (And Coor-bor the Great agrees with me. )
The "head" is wonderful, and it even has "voice tubes" like Robby's! _________________ ____________

A more modern retro-future design. In 1998 Robert Egger had this Cadillac bicycle made:

A lot of the futures we were expecting are decidedly retro now... |

Years ago, I saw a program on this on one of the cable channels. The funny thing is that the U.S. knew of this project from the beginning, when a satellite photographed the construction site. They watched the building and testing of the vehicle. It is kind of strange that the Soviets didn't cover the build site.

The Ekranoplan was a ground-effect vehicle, which I would place in a different category than a true aircraft. |

I think the transport seen fleetingly in Westworld (1973), used for ferrrying customers to and from the resort, was supposed to be a ground-effect vehicle. _________________ ...or not...

That's an interesting point. The craft only flies a few feet above the water, but it does in fact "fly". Every aircraft has a maximum altitude, and this one has the lowest "maximum altitude" of them all.
All I'm saying is that if an airplane is defined as a machine that leaves the ground and moves through the air, the Ekranoplan qualifies.
And let's not forget that the Wright brothers first flight at Kitty Hawk didn't get much higher than this thing, but they were given credit for achieving sustained flight. _________________ ____________

roadandtrack.com treats it as a real item: "Ahead of its time, but not ready for primetime," they say.
Quote: | Following the end of World War II, the United States military invested a great deal of money in the development of new hardware offering tactical advantages on future battlefields. One of the concepts which the Army Transportation Research Command evaluated was the 1960 Curtiss-Wright Model 2500 Air Car. This 21-foot-long, 8-foot-wide, 5-foot-tall contraption was everything that Luke Skywalker's landspeeder would promise 17 years later — stylish driving without the burden of wheels.
Curtiss-Wright was and remains an aerospace and defence supplier with experience in aircraft development. Following the war, the military had a keen interest in improving amphibious landing and transport craft. The Air Car was developed with that need in mind. Since the United States hadn't quite perfected repulsorlift technology yet, Curtiss-Wright had to go in a different direction, creating what was termed a 'Ground Effects Machine' (GEM), which we now know as a hovercraft.
Twin 180-hp Lycoming aircraft engines were mounted fore and aft in the Air Car's tube-frame chassis and powered two enormous, vertical ducted fans. At full power, the Air Car rode on a 15-inch cushion of air and could lift a 1000-lb payload. |

Strange. Have I changed universe? Up until now every reference I've see had it "Curtis-Wright". _________________ Common Sense ISN'T Common |
