Sir Alec Guinness ("Star Wars") is perfect as the brilliant, shy, courageous chemist with the funny walk and the new discovery -- an indestructible fabric that stays so spotlessly white it glows in the dark. The British textile industry is aghast at the thought of clothes that will never have to be replaced because they won't wear out! In an effort to "save England's economy" they send their henchmen to sabotage his plans to market the fabric.

Funniest scenes: During early attempts to formulate the synthetic fabric, the lab assistants routinely dive for cover behind a wall of sandbags because the equipment repeatedly blows up.

Later, when Guinness is wearing a brilliant white suit made of the new fabric, he escapes from the bad guys by unraveling a single thread of the super-strong material and using it lower himself from a second story window! Also starring Joan Greenwood ("Mysterious Island"), Cecil Parker, Michael Gough ("Konga", "The Came From Beyond Space"), Ernest Thesiger. Directed by Alexander Mackendrick, who also co-wrote the screenplay.

IMDB has one interesting trivia items for this production. Very Happy

~ Sir Alec Guinness performed the stunt of climbing down the side of the mansion. He was convinced by a technician, that the piano wire holding him up would not break, since only piano wire with kinks in it would be prone to breaking. As he got to about four feet from the ground, the wire did in fact break.

Note from me: He was lucky not to have fallen from higher up, but to fall flat on his back from four feet up could have been pretty bad! Shocked
