"The Flying Saucer" has always been one of my fond memories from childhood. I was listening to the radio in my Dad's car, parked in the driveway, when it was first played on the air. I've since converted it into a karaoke track. Unfortunately, most of the songs in it are obscure to today's listeners, unless they happen to be followers of Brent's "Music You Need to Hear" thread. The producers followed it up with "Flying Saucer the 2nd", which was only a one-side piece (the original being both side 1 and side 2). The flip side of FS2 was "Martian Melody", and instrumental. _________________ ...or not...

Apparently there were variations on "Martian Melody" released. The one Butch posted is different from the one on my 45. At first I thought the person posting the piece was messing with his turntable by dragging his finger on it to slow it down, then toward the end of the piece, spinning it faster. But it seems that this was done in the studio. I listened to another posting that showed a video of a 78 RPM recording of the same tune being played, and it sounded the same.
The version on my 45 (on the Luniverse label) is like this:

Gentlemen, I submit that the ultimate sci-fi rock song is Johnny Cymbal's Robinson Crusoe on Mars, the lyrics of which tell a wonderful story about a little boy going to sleep "with his new space helmet on his head", and dreaming about exploring a fantastic version of the Red Planet.
The boy talks in his sleep, and his brother (who tells us all about this in the song) listens to his little brother's amazing descriptions of Mars. The next morning at breakfast the two brothers tell their father about the dream, and the proud father assures his sons that someday they might become like "Robinson Crusoe on Mars".
The song is a perfect portrayal of all the things we felt as kids when we fell in love with science fiction. I get misty-eyed every time I hear it! And it captures the feel of that classic movie in a way I wouldn't have thought possible, including the use of song lyrics that actually describe visual elements from the movie!
If you've never heard the song, treat yourself to it right now. You'll be itchin' to watch the movie again when it's finished.

Very cool - he's also the guy who did Mr. Base Man, so he gets double points for that! I admit, I hadn't heard it until today, so thanks!
I think my vote for a neglected early sci-fi song might be for Rodd Keith's Saucer In The Sky: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDKx-fHDHG8
A more recent tune if you've not encountered it - Erin Hill's Giant Mushrooms:

Holy mutations, Doc — both those songs are so damned enjoyable I felt like smoking a cigarette afterwards and asking my wife if it was good for her, too!
(Except that I don't smoke and I'm divorced — both of which have insured my good health. )
I love the videos that go with them, as well. The animation used in Rodd Keith's "Saucer In The Sky" was from various sources I recognized (like The Jetsons, Magic Highway USA, and several drive-in theater snack bar plugs, I think). They were edited together beautifully.
The delightful video for Erin Hill's "Giant Mushrooms" was as much a treat for the eyes as the song was for the ears. I loved it!
Thanks!
