Star Trek: Costumes Book
By StarTrek.com Staff
BDT: I prefer the word uniforms over costumes.
Star Trek: Costumes -- Five Decades of Fashion from the Final Frontier, written by veteran Trek authors and historians Paula M. Block and Terry J. Erdmann, and featuring an introduction by Emmy Award-winning costume designer Robert Blackman, will be released in September as a 256-page hardcover book. Together, the husband-and-wife team of Block and Erdmann will guide readers through an in-depth look at the innovative costume designs at the heart of the Trek universe, spanning from The Original Series up through and including the latest big-screen adventures
.
Additional details, straight from the publisher, include:
From the classic Starfleet uniforms and daringly provocative outfits of The Original Series, to flowing Vulcan robes, flamboyant Ferengi fashions, and formidable Klingon wedding attire, Star Trek: Costumes explores how these designs have played a key role in transporting fans to distant worlds and alien cultures over the last five decades.
Filled with exclusive photography, stills from the saga, rare concept art, and other striking visuals, Star Trek: Costumes also focuses on the talented individuals who have brought the Star Trek universe to life, including original costume designer William Ware Theiss and his successors, Robert Fletcher, Robert Blackman, and, most recently, Michael Kaplan.
Featuring extensive information on the creation of each featured costume, with insight and
anecdotes from interviewees including Blackman, Kaplan, J.J. Abrams, LeVar Burton, Jonathan
Frakes and Ronald D. Moore, this book is a comprehensive and captivating celebration of the
incredible artistry that has made Star Trek's costumes as innovative and imaginative as its futuristic technologies.
Insight Editions will unveil Star Trek: Costumes in the fall, and it will cost $60.00. Keep an eye on StarTrek.com for additional details.

Behind the Scenes of Costumes: Five Decades of Fashion From the Final Frontier
By Paula Block & Terry Erdmann
....Over the next few days, details rolled in. The familiar voice (a longtime acquaintance at CBS Consumer Products) put us in touch with Chris Prince, an editor at the publishing company Insight Editions. Chris and his colleagues envisioned a photo-heavy coffee table book featuring Star Trek costumes. It would be published to coincide with our favorite franchise's fiftieth anniversary.
Sweet! we thought. Who wouldn't want to read a book like that? We certainly would. So we said "yes."
That was the easy part. The rest was like leaping into the abyss: fun and frantic, but an abyss, nonetheless. We were given a deadline of three months. Ninety days. So much for the early Oscar contenders.
The first step, we decided, was to find photography — high-quality, high-resolution, photography — to illustrate this special book. At the same time, we'd need to find and interview the men and women who over the decades had designed the costumes. Plus the people who'd actually worn the costumes. And, of course, we'd need the actual costumes.
Oops.....

Star Trek Costumes : Five Decades Of Fashion From The Final Frontier 1/7/16
an original review by bulldogtrekker
Paula M. Block and Terry J. Erdmann wrote this long-overdue book. The 255 pages showcase the unique costumes of the Star trek saga, taking in fifty years of iconic and hugely influential designs. It is a big and heavy coffee table book.
If any criticism can be made of the book, the authors underestimated the impact of the original classic female Starfleet uniforms in TV history. There are only 2 pages devoted to the ladies Star Trek miniskirt and boots. This fashion style, with modifications, has persisted for fifty years! If your first question about this book is will this book help me make a pattern for a Star Trek uniform, then this is not the book for you.
Especially detailed was the Next Generation section; we learn about Deanna Troi's skant dress, which she only wore in the first and last episode.
It appears that every wedding dress that appeared in any Trek series or movie is covered in the book. The book is also heavy with Vulcan robes and alien attire.
The newest TV show, Enterprise, was not as covered as much as the other spinoffs. There was no mention of the costumes that were sold at the Christie's auction in 2006 until the very last page. Some of the text in the book seemed to be very familiar and dated.
4 out of 5 stars
