The weapon: It looks to me like some super-soaker or sound-and-light toy painted over.
The women: Things have sure changed since I attended the Equicon Star Trek conventions back in the '70s. There were fewer "babes" and more of the type who were appreciative of ST fandom being accepting of "anomalous morphology".
