This is one one of my favorites. It involves a Chinese river that's in just the right spot to receive a wave large enough to provide a gnarly ride for surfers. The wave is caused by the perfect alignment of the Earth, the Moon, and the sun.



It happens about once a year, and when it does, the wave comes in from the ocean and travels up a river in Hangshou, China at about 25 mph. The reason there are buildings behind the surfer in the photo above is because he's traveling past them as he rides the wave inland, away from the ocean, which of course is behind him!
