Another good book to read is the fantasy novel "Master of the Five Magics. The book follows the protagonist Alodor, an apprentice thaumaturge on his quest to restore his family's nobility. Each of his attempts only lead him to explore another branch of magic to complete his quest.
on of the great things about this novel is the branches of magic are well thought out and are very distinct in their areas. For example, thaumaturgy is governed by the two laws "like produces like" and "once together, always together". In the beginning of the story, Alodor took a sliver of wood from a gondola and rose the gondola in the air; the sliver, still "together" with the gondola rose proportionately with the sliver to produce the "like" effect.
This was recommended by a friend over 30 years ago and it is still a favored book today. There are two sequels; Secret of the Sixth Magic and Riddle of the Seven Realms. I don't think that either of the two sequels capture the magic of the first, but both are also good reads. |
