I recall an old time radio show called Lights Out by Arch Obler. There was an episode named, I think, Chicken Heart, wherein scientists were growing chicken heart cells in a laboratory that began multiplying uncontrolled until they absorbed the whole world.
The last two scientists were observing this from a small airplane as it was running out of fuel. |

That must have been the episode that Bill Cosby based his "Chicken Heart" routine on.
But as to Pye-Rate's initial posting, we just finished watching Fast Food Nation (2006) with Greg Kinnear, Bruce Willis, and other name actors. (It's a drama, not a documentary.) I must agree that synthetic meat would be a giant step in the right direction. The idea may be unappealing to many meat consumers, but that's mainly because they don't have to witness the process that brings "real" meat to their plates.

Gee, I've always assumed that meat packers only killed "bad" cows, chickens, and fish — you know, the ones that deserved to die!
Sort of like the way the good guys in movies only kill bad guys, right?
Hey, if that's not the way it really is, I'm become a vegetarian right now! (I mean, right after dinner. Steak is expensive . . . )

The idea of tissue growth through cloning technologies for uses other than medical is possible, though presently very expensive.
Who would pay $10,000 for a pound of filet when you can get a tin of Soylent Green for five bucks? |

Short of synthetically grown meat, we drop by VeggieGrill whenever we're in the neighborhood. They have meatless substitutes in several dishes. Their Chickin' tastes like... well, chicken.
