I just hope the film will not tell this complex story in a way that makes it hard to follow for simple folk like me. _________________ ____________

You may have to watch it twice, Bud; the first time to hate it, and the second time to love it. _________________ ...or not...

I did a little reading about the manga which Ghost in the Shell is based on and found out some interesting things (including the fact that "manga" mean a style of Japanese comic books and graphic novels, typically aimed at adults as well as children).
The premise is a little bit like Surrogates and a little like Blade Runner.
In Surrogates, the "bodies" were entirely robotic, controlled remotely by the brain activity of people laying around at home. In Blade Runner the bodies were "genetically engineered replicants".
The Ghosts in the Shell, many of the characters are "cyborgs", people whose physical abilities are extended beyond normal human limitations by mechanical elements built into the body.
Some people have minor enhancements that allow them to interface their biological brain with various networks. At the other end of the spectrum are people whose brains have been so badly damaged by injury or disease that they been almost completely replaced by cybernetic components.
But in this future society, people's bodies also vary in nature, from fully normal to largely prosthetic/robotic.
I found this interesting statement at the end of the Wikipedia article about the manga.

This high level of cyberization, however, opens the brain up to attacks from highly skilled hackers, with the most dangerous being those who will hack a person to bend to their whims.

That's the new wrinkle in the old concept. All interfaces are a two-way street — which means in addition to the data you intend to upload and download, there can also be data taken from you without your knowledge, and data forced into your brain against your will.
The hero of the story is, of course, Scarlet Johansson. Thank goodness they didn't try to "cyberize" her too much.
The villain in the story is the Puppeteer, who is described in the Wikipedia article as, "a cyber-criminal wanted for committing a large number of crimes by proxy through "ghost hacking" humans with cyberbrains." _________________ ____________
