The first paragraph of this article put me on a good mood.

Don Dixie said he got started doing space artwork in 1971 when he was in college and needed money, so he did five paintings (which he describes as “not very good”), and then ran an ad in Sky & Telescope which offered slides of the artwork.

To his surprise, he started getting orders!

At the time the article was published in the May 1977, Don had already done paintings for NASA films, covers for published books, and magnificent paintings he sold at one-man shows. He says that one of his greatest inspirations was the Chesley Bonestell's book The Conquest of Space, which he acquired a copy of when he was fourteen.

He also credits his love for science fiction as part of his passion to paint the cosmos in all it’s glory.

Don was just 25 when the Starlog article was written, but he’s gone to become a successful and well-respected artist, with a hugh body of work which displays his awesome talent.

It’s heart-warming to read about a young man in his mid-twenties who worked hard to become a world renowned artist in 1977 — and who now has achieved his dream!

This first image below (which shows Saturn as viewed from Titan) is the one Don discussed in the article, one of his earliest pieces. The terrible black-and-white image in the article (with no gray at all!) was so bad that I found a color jpeg of it and pasted it into the Starlog page!

I did the same thing on the page of the article with the photo of Don standing in front of his framed painting of the non-fiction book cover for T.A. Heppenheimer’s Colonies in Space.

The painting itself in shown below. Since it was one of Don’s early paintings, the perspective is a bit off in several places. But his later paintings show a remarkable improvement in technique!
