Does anyone remember this show? (I received the DVD last Friday.)

Tales of the 77th Bengal Lancers is a television series broadcast in the United States by NBC during its 1956-57 season.
In a period in which much of the programming on U.S. television consisted of Westerns, Tales of the 77th Bengal Lancers could best be described as an "Eastern". It consisted of the adventures of a fictional regiment of the famed real-life cavalry of the British Indian Army. The leading characters were the 77th's officers: the commander, Colonel Standish (Patrick Whyte) and two of his lieutenants, William Storm (Warren Stevens) and Michael Rhodes (Phil Carey). Rhodes was portrayed as a Canadian, purportedly because the actor portraying him, a native of New Jersey, could not be coached to produce a credible English accent.

Nope. The fort set was torn down in the early 1970s.

The official name of the park is Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park. It's under the jurisdiction of Los Angeles County, not the State of California.
Back in my Boy Scouting days (a long time ago), my troop took a trip to Vasquez Rocks one weekend. Someone mentioned something about an "old Spanish fort" on the property, so I went to have a look. When I got inside the fort, I saw that it was made of two-by-fours, chicken wire and plaster -- not exactly authentic Spanish Colonial architecture! |

The fort showed up om many TV series from the 60s.
I saw it appear on 2 episodes of The Big Valley,it was on another episode of Bonanza as well as The High Chaparral & The Wild Wild West.
Popped up on Mission:Impossible too.
Philip Carey was on my favorite TV western show Laredo(1965~67). He played Captain Parmalee of the Texas Rangers,Company B.
The rangers who answered to him were Reese Bennett(Neville Brand),Chad Cooper(Peter Brown),Joe Riley(William Smith) & in the second season Erik Hunter(Robert Wolders)joined the cast.
What I liked so much about the series was that they played it for rollicking laughs as well as action-adventure.
Not too many westerns were done in such a fun & humorous manner back in those days.
The cast had wonderful chemistry together.The show should have lasted much longer than it did. It certainly deserved to do so.

It's a little known fact that Spanish forts were in fact merely facades made of two-by-fours, chicken wire, and plaster. However, the Indians didn't know this because they were never allowed inside.
Of course, the Spanish were equally unaware that all Indian teepees were inflatable and easily collapsed with a single shot.
The Indians had other little tricks as well, like putting blankets over standard leather saddles to make it appear they did NOT have saddles like the paleface Cavalry soldiers.

I remember this series well!
Along with CAPTAIN GALLENT OF THE FOREIGN LEGION it whetted my thirst for looking at exotic parts of the world.

I was just out at the location in June 2019.
That first post really should be edited to include a (BUD: No, the fort sets were torn down in the early 70s!)
