Okay, so that's the SCIENCE. Now let's add the FICTION!
________________________________
Picture this:
A fire breaks out in the International Space Station.
The crew can't contain it, and they prepare to evacuate in the Soyuz-TMA spacecraft.
________
But the fire cuts them off from the airlock that leads to the vehicle, and they come up with a desperate plan: don their spacesuits and use the Cygnus cargo spacecraft holding the fire control experiment which is currently docked with the ISS (as shown in Butch's post) to get away from the smoke-filled space station and await rescue in orbit.
However, once aboard and detached from the ISS they realize there's an itsy bitsy problem with their plan — one that simply reeks of the cruel irony the universe seems so fond of.
The satellite has the fire experiment aboard which is described in Butch's post above, and the hasty launch from ISS required several system overrides which cause the experiment to begin running automatically . . . and without a way to stop it. The experiment is sealed away from cargo section in which the astronauts are located.
The heat from the experiment will compromise their spacesuits, and after the experiment has run (and it's telemetry is automatically transmitted back to Earth), the Cygnus spacecraft is programmed to dive into the atmosphere and burn up over the Pacific!
How will the crewmen be saved? Are they destined to meet a fiery demise? Can they hitch a ride back to Earth with Sandra Bullock?
If I were writing the story, I'd do the unexpected and have the crew find a way to get back to the ISS and into the Soyuz-TMA spacecraft from outside the fire-filled station, and then return to Earth.
Don't know exactly how they'd do that yet, but working out the details is what makes writing fun. _________________ ____________

Science Fiction connections for these Science Facts
Two big budget sci-fi movies presented "zero-G fires" very convincingly, and there may be more I haven't thought of yet. What about you guys? Any more candidates for this "hot topic"?
Enjoy the trailers, and feel free to discuss these movies right here or in their threads by clicking on the titles.
And add your own suggestions, too!

Pull a "THE MARTIAN" like purge of all the oxygen from the ISS after donning their spacesuits.
They undock the Cygnus leaving the airlock seals open.
They jump into the Soyuz to return to Earth, but the escaping gas puts the ISS into a spiral. They must weave their way through the whirling solar arrays to finally escape.
Problem is..... There are 3 American and 2 Russian astronaut/cosmonauts and only 3 seats on the Soyuz!
How do they decide who goes and who stays?
Is there a second Soyuz? |
