The US Space Force flag revealed today. How do you march in free-fall or on the Moon or Mars?:

Actually, I think it's a great and appropriate homage to the memory of STAR TREK and STARFLEET!

If....and it certainly looks like it is....influenced by the STARFLEET emblem I think that's a good thing! Don't let DTDS get in the way of what may become a very positive thing!

For the record, I feel like Trump's "Space Force" is a bad idea. What will this new branch of the military do that NASA couldn't do? The space program is supposed to be about exploration and scientific progress.

Why do we need a military branch that's separate from the U.S. Air Force?

I just don't get it . . .

The point is ….You have to take into consideration what other, not so friendly nations may be doing.

China is ramping space superiority big time, adding a military element to it with hunter/killer satellites etc. Russia is doing the same thing, not quite so quickly, but definitely in progress.

NASA is a civilian organization as well it should be, but the new SPACE FORCE has the ability to develop military aspects in response to the other side's developments. It would leave atmospheric activities in the pervue of the AIR FORCE where it belongs.

There has long been a SPACE COMMAND as a part of the USAF, but just as the USAF grew out of the ARMY AIR CORP (And don't forget NAVY and MARINE AVIATION!) the new SPACE FORCE is a re-specialization of the efforts and reduces redundancy (Lowering fiscal expenditures too!).

For better or worse, NOT to respond could be dangerous and potentially fatal to our nation.

Just my feelings on it.

A version of hat Chevron has been used by the U.S. government since the late 1940s.

They have been talking about forming a Space Force or Space Corp for decades. With an ever increasing number of assets being put into space. Weather, TV, communications , data, GPS satellites, and others, a Space Force makes sense.

I think that the current disdain for the Space Force may have more to do with the dislike that many have for the man that signed it into existence, than the actual organization itself.

But why such a large force? Most of what it does is by ground control technicians either directly or through computers. The hardware in space is controlled pretty much the same or pre-programmed.

Or is this a way for the president to get "his" military parade?

Our US military already sucks up a enormous amount of $$$ in order to maintain the corrupt military-industrial-complex.

Now the SF will take even more $$$.

Go America.

Ironically, that brings up an important point.

Based on Eadie's comment about how "Most of what it does is by ground control technicians — either directly or through computers. The hardware in space is controlled pretty much the same or per-programmed."

So, what threats in space will need the Space Force astronauts go into orbit and actual deal first hand?

Krel described the potential threats this way.

Krel wrote:

I understand his description of the threats . . . but I don't understand what he thinks the Space Force guys will do to deal with these problems. Confused

Eadie nailed it when she said that technological problems with satellites in space can be handled by technicians here on Earth — even when the problems are caused by satellites put there by other nations.

Even if we can't neutralize space-based threats using computers on the ground, I still can't image what our tough Space Force astronauts will go up and do to fix these problems! Shocked

If direct action is needed to neutralize orbiting satellites or weapons platforms belonging to enemy nations, couldn't we simply launch weapons from Earth which would be more efficient than sending up a squad of Space Force warriors to take out the orbiting threats?

I mean, come on, folks! Is Trump imagining these Space Force soldiers fighting in high orbit like the scenes from Moonraker! Shocked

Guys, that's just plain ridiculous — and very typical of the man who thinks that conducting Covid-19 testing actually increases the number of people who actually HAVE the virus — as shown at the 3:45 mark in the video at link above.

He also claims that the Coronavirus can be treated by injecting patients with disinfectants, or somehow shining ultra-violent light inside their bodies to kill it.

Wow. I'm pretty sure the first suggestion is fatal and the second one is impossible. Shocked

If you're a loyal fan of Fox News, you might not have even heard about this stuff. They do a great job of avoiding the unflattering news stories about Trump, or airing them and then ridiculing them with moronic comments.

The point here is that Trump is not real knowledgeable when it comes to basic science . . or common sense. Rolling Eyes

Anyway, I just don't understand why we need a Space Force when a well-funded NASA organization, working with the military, could be trained to deal with any threat from another country if they put things into orbit which became dangerous.

Guys, please forgive my anti-Trump comments! Embarassed

I promise they're all based on well-documented events, as can be seen in the video below. So I'm sure pro-Trump folks won't feel I'm being unfair. Very Happy

After all, he did in fact say that strange stuff. Confused

Trump's disinfectant suggestion "dangerous and idiotic" and "hugely irresponsible," doctor says

Well Bud, I think that's your first assumption.
Whoever said anything about Astronauts? Except for possibly manning Lunar and orbital bases (Along with the civilian NASA Astronauts) they aren't going to do STAR WARS type space attacks on a "Death Star"

You do realize that the Russian and Chineese Cosmonauts are active duty military?

To abandon superiority or at least parity of the "high ground" is not only foolish but possibly fatal.

Your obvious dislike of the POTUS clouds your reasoning. This initiative will long outlive his tenure and the path it can take will be what is required beyond anyone's current "vision"..

Thomas Jefferson got a lot of critism when he founded the MARINE CORP out of the NAVY and ARMY. He first sent them to the Middle East to fight the Barbary pirates who were harrasing American shipping. Many thought this was the beginning of "foreign entanglements". They were paramount in the war against Japan in the 40's. The British had long before established a "marine force"

When the AIR FORCE was formed out of the ARMY AIR CORP there was a lot of critism (Especialy from the ARMY!) that it was not needed.

Sorry you don't agree. We'll just have to see how things develop.

And so are most American astronauts as well as most other nations' spacemen. Only a few are civilian specialists. While men and women who fly in American spacecraft are known as astronauts, and those who fly in Russian spacecraft are cosmonauts, those who fly in Chinese spacecraft are known as yuhangyuans or sometimes taikonauts [Borrowed from Japanese 太KO那u同时 "At the same time. The word yuhangyuan is Chinese for space navigator. [宇航员 yuhang yuan.]

Eadie wrote:

Originally they were all fighter and test pilots from the American military.

NOW however, most are from civilian life. Except for pilots technical expertise is from the civilian sector. This is also true in many foreign Astronauts associated with our space program.

Since the beginning of NASA, all U.S. Astronauts have had to be civilian. The original Astronauts were ex-military, but still civilian.

When the space program was moved from the Air Force to NASA, President Kennedy ordered that the U.S. Astronauts not be active military. This was so the U.S. space program could be promoted as a civilian endeavor, not a military one.*

David.
