Quote:
The Last of Us is an American post-apocalyptic drama television series created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann for HBO.

Based on the 2013 video game developed by Naughty Dog, the series follows Joel (Pedro Pascal), a smuggler tasked with escorting the teenage Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across a post-apocalyptic United States. The supporting cast features Gabriel Luna as Joel's younger brother Tommy, Merle Dandridge as resistance leader Marlene, and Anna Torv as Joel's smuggler partner Tess.

The Last of Us, said to be the largest television production in Canadian history, was filmed in Alberta from July 2021 to June 2022. It is the first HBO series based on a video game, and is a joint production by Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, Naughty Dog, the Mighty Mint, and Word Games.

The first season consists of nine episodes written by Druckmann, who wrote and co-directed the original game, and Mazin. The score was composed by Gustavo Santaolalla, who composed for the game, and David Fleming.

The series began airing on January 15, 2023. It received acclaim from critics, who praised the performances, writing, production design, and score; several considered it the best live-action adaptation of a video game

The trailer looked pretty ho-hum to me until the dark, creepy rendition of A-ha's "Take on Me" started playing; then I laughed hysterically. I'm sooo tired of the bouncy, happy song made creepy trailer trope. Rolling Eyes

Although I can't wait for the inevitable dark, creepy rendition of "Mahna Mahna" for a horror film trailer Laughing

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_of_Us_(TV_series)#Critical_response

Quote:
On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, The Last of Us has an approval rating of 96% based on 208 reviews, with an average rating of 9/10.

The website's general consensus reads, "Retaining the most addictive aspects of its beloved source material while digging deeper into the story, The Last of Us is bingeworthy TV that ranks among the all-time greatest video game adaptations." Metacritic calculated an average of 84 out of 100 based on 41 reviews, indicating "universal acclaim". Several reviewers considered it the best live-action adaptation of a video game, with GameSpot's Mark Delaney saying it "feels like the beginning of a new era" for the genre.

The cast's performances received widespread acclaim, with critics singling out the chemistry between Pascal and Ramsey for praise.

Evening Standard's Vicky Jessop said the two "steal every scene they're in", while Rolling Stone's Alan Sepinwall called them "compulsively watchable and almost instantly endearing".

Empire's John Nugent and /Film's Valerie Ettenhofer referred to Pascal's performance as the best of his career, citing his ability to portray nuance and rare vulnerability. TechRadar's Axel Metz described him as the "perfect real-world manifestation" of Joel.

Several critics found Ramsey gave the show's breakout performance for her balance of comedy and emotion, with Time's Judy Berman calling her "the show's greatest asset" and IGN's Simon Cardy applauding her for "making her mark" on Ellie, a character already considered iconic long before Ramsey's portrayal.

The performances of Torv, Offerman, and Bartlett were highly praised, with the latter two being described by Complex's William Goodman as "career-best" and by Inverse's Dais Johnston as "Emmy-worthy". CNET's Sean Keane found Lynskey gave her character a "quiet menace" and called Shepherd's performance "charismatic".

For anyone interested, believe it or not, some have put together the cut scenes and some interactive parts of the two video games to come up with the equivalent of full-length film features. Because high graphics modes were used, then photorealistic portrayals have been possible. Links to some of them here:

https://www.postapocalypticmedia.com/watch-the-last-of-us-cut-scenes-part-1-2/

Take note that there's a 2+-hour version which shows cut scenes and a 5+-hour version which includes gameplay between cut scenes to tie them together.

Finally, the TV series makes some changes to the game and offers a better portrayal of the narrative thanks to more room for characterization.

Been watching and like it. Did not know about the game but the series is excellent. I'm up to date on all the episodes.

The series is similar to the first game except for a few changes, but in both cases I found the premise for the journey weak, and even weaker for the game because they want their weapons back even though these appear to be readily available.

The storyline of the second game looks awful. Given that, I think this show is good only for a season or two. Otherwise, it may end up like Walking Dead.

The problem with that point is that producers want to maximize profits, and that usually means continuing a show until it ends on a high note or is run to the ground.

It's actually well-made in terms of dramatic elements and characterization, but in terms of the main story it's similar to Walking Dead and others.
