The SyFy Channel has a very interesting TV show called Face Off.

Aspiring make-up artists compete against one another in a challenge to create an original make-up.

They are then judged by professionals in the movie/TV industry.

Some of these talented amateurs do fantastic jobs in the relatively short time period allotted to them.

The premise was also tried on the show Hot Set where teams created original sets based upon the scenario given to them. Much like FO.

They are now doing one with animatronic puppets.

My though on all this is most likely an unrealistic one given budgets as well as time constraints in television.

But here it is anyway: Imagine they are doing a brand new sf TV show. We'll use Star Trek as an example.
Each week they require either alien make-ups for the guest stars, brand new sets for a story, or an animatronic creature.

They give these assignments to the respective teams in their field to construct whatever is needed. The producers then chose the make-up, set, and puppet that fits their vision for that specific episode.

If the make-up, set, and puppet not picked is still a great design, it may be utilized in a future episode.

It reminds me a little of Junkyard Wars (aka Scrap Heap Challenge), in which two teams would be told what they had to build within ten hours, using whatever they could find in a giant junk yard!

It was fun to watch these engineers frantically put together vehicles and other types of machinery, starting from scratch and using components they had to scrounge up. Cool

As for Face Off, the video below shows just how it is!

They had a show like that, it was named "Farscape", which had creature effects by the Henson Company.
