Special effects legend Douglas Trumbull (April 8, 1942~February 7, 2022) has passed away at 79 years of age.
Doug's phenomenal career included special effects supervisor, film director (Silent Running) and inventor.
He won numerous awards including The Academy of Motion pictures Science & Engineering Award in 1993.
His film credits include 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Andromeda Strain, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Blade Runner.
"I always try to find an organic — or analog — solution instead of the knee-jerk reaction to use computer graphics. The reason for this is: every time I try this, I get some delightful result that is,in some respects unexpected. There are magical things that happen in nature — gravity, fluids, lighting — that one couldn't really design using computer graphics." |
