The sequel we wanted to Robot Jox never happened. The producers did release a movie called Robot Jox 2: Crash and Burn in 1990, but it wasn't actually a sequel.
Then in 1993 they released Robot Wars, which was also promoted as a sequel, even though it wasn't one either!
The trailer makes Robot Wars appear to be packed with great stop motion special effects, and in all fairness the movie does indeed have some great moments. David Allen was the special effects supervisor on this movie, as well as the stop motion animator on Robot Jox, so quite naturally the FX in both films are exceptional.

Dave Allen's stop~frame animation was awesome to watch in this film.
I wonder if he ever got frustrated with animating mechanical devices compared to living creatures?
I know Ray Harryhausen found animating the space ships from his Earth vs the Flying Saucers tedious because he could not give the saucers a personality. Perhaps that's why he always said that for him it was the least favorite of all the films he did.
Ray did continue to animate models in his films that were not creatures. The wooden masthead of Sinbad's ship, and the stone statue of Kali from The Golden Voyage of Sinbad.
The gigantic stature of Talos from Jason and the Argonauts.
The Minaton statue from Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger.
However, all of these objects were based upon humans or mythological creatures. So he could still successfully imbue these creations with some kind of persona.
A robot can be trickier if it is designed to be so mechanical that one cannot discern any biological features to relate to. |
