Should Star Trek Films Return to the Prime Timeline?
~ Screen Rant
Star Trek has remained a ship somewhat adrift, especially since the prequel series Star Trek: Enterprise was canceled before its fifth season. When J.J. Abrams brought his kinetic, alternative timeline to life in 2009, the long-running saga received a shot in the arm.
Since then, the franchise — now split between Paramount (film) and CBS (small screen) — continues to seek out for the right vehicle to truly set the stars ablaze in the 21st century.
Star Trek Into Darkness and Beyond were both exciting and generally well-received entries , but they fell victim to diminishing returns at the box office when Beyond's meager haul seemed to call into question the fiscal viability of a fourth entry in the Kelvin timeline.
Nevertheless, the saga remains wildly popular, with CBS unveiling its first streaming endeavor, Star Trek: Discovery, at the end of September. Longtime franchise creative Nicholas Meyer (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan), who's involved with the latest show as a writer and producer, recently revealed a new project.
Although he hasn't disclosed the true nature of his undertaking, he did suggest that fans can assume it's a feature film.
At this point, production on a fourth feature remains uncertain, at least according to Zachary Quinto (alternative Spock). Meyer could be exploring new avenues for the next Kelvin feature, but he may also be drafting a cinematic concept for the Prime timeline. Either way, is Star Trek ready to return to its classic continuity? . . .
While a return to the Prime reality contains endless possibilities for new stories and elements, would it require Trek's alternative universe to end? Not necessarily . . .
BDT note: possible plot of Star Trek 4?
Initially, some rumors suggested that J.J. Abrams' pitch (and the inclusion of Chris Hemsworth) meant that Kirk would travel back in time to prevent the destruction of the U.S.S. Kelvin. If he succeeded at preventing his father's death, though, he'd also collapse the Kelvin timeline, potentially resigning three films to cinematic limbo. Were Paramount to head in this direction, a major temporal event seems like the only appropriate send-off for the alternative Enterprise unless they collapse both continuities into the Prime timeline.
BDT: now that sounds like a Star Trek plot

It's interesting in view of how much the Star Trek franchise has evolved in the last six years. _________________ ____________

So basically 7 years has past since BDT's (RIP) post.
It's interesting to look back at what has happened.
No new movie.
Are the 3 Abrams movies going to be stand alone anathema's in the trek timeline?
While not bad pop science fiction, they don't really fit in to the Star Trek universe. Since Abrams got hold of Star Wars he seems inclined to leave Star Trek alone (Thank the maker!)
But we have seen a rebirth of Star Trek on the small screen.
Discovery is in it's 5th season. It drifts between awful and excellent. Trending to pretty good overall.
Strange New Worlds is mostly excellent, VERY good Star Trek that treads the line between paying homage to the original series and updating to modern times. It's not perfect, but it is well done.
Section 31 is coming as a television film. Will it lead to another series?
Star Trek has always been at its best in episodic television that uses science fiction to shine a light on contemporary society using characters and writing that are honorable and somewhat righteous while maintaining humanities foibles. |
