Well, I'll say one thing for movie titles that have something in common — like, they have the same first letters, or they all have numbers in the titles — at least they give me something to say about the featured threads when the movies themselves are duds.

On the other hand, mediocre movies like the ones below are fun to "fix up" by suggesting what they should have been. It's an enjoyable intellectual exercise that stimulate the "little gray cells", as Hercule Poirot often said.

The Power (1968)

From the excellent novel by Frank Robinson comes one of producer George Pal's least effective efforts, hampered by below-par special effects, and a sometimes-confusing plot.

George Hamilton, Michael Rennie, and an all-star cast do their best with this story of a desperate search for an illusive, evil "superman" who can kill by telekinesis, disguise his appearance with telepathic hypnosis, and create hallucinations that confound his pursuers. The superman's identity is not revealed until the climax.

The film lacks the spooky, atmospheric quality that the premise requires. The result is a kind of ghost-story-told-in-broad-daylight.

Directed by Byron Haskin. Robinson's novel succeeds much better, including the surprise ending. (For additional reading on the evolutionary superman idea try "Phoenix Prime" by Ted White. Hint to George Lucas: it would make a great movie!).

Invasion of the Star Creatures (1962)



Unfunny science fiction comedy, written by Jonathan Haze, frequent star of Roger Corman films. Two soldiers (Bob Ball and Frankie Ram) manage to thwart an alien invasion by giving the sexy female invaders their first kiss, thereby seducing them.

An unbelievably bad film in all respects. Directed by Bruno Ve Sota. ____________________________________________________________________

Project M7 aka The Net (1953 England)

M7 is a new supersonic aircraft being designed and tested at a secret research base.

One of the project members turns out to be an enemy spy. This low-key British entry fails to offer much excitement, but it does contain some good aerial scenes.

Directed by Anthony Asquith. Starring Phyllis Calvert, James Donald ("Five Million Years to Earth), and Herbert Lom ("Mysterious Island").
