Are we creating our own replacements?
If a true AI was to be integrated with what we have done in the area of robotics we are the creator a very real "Terminator" race of silicon chipped replacement organisims!
Perhaps with the best of intentions we are setting the Universe up with a new, immortal, self-replicating entity.
A further question is....Would it really be wrong, in the definition of "evolution" if our "primitive" intellect gave birth to a "better"...perhaps superior mode of organisim?

By gum, Gord, I started thinking that very thing even before I got down to your fascinating closing remark!
If evolution is how mankind came into existence, then the logical extension of the concept is for us to create something better than us — and then "survival of the fittish" dictates that they replace us.
Here's a wild and ironic thought.
One celled organisms evolve into multi-celled creature, and the process eventually leads to mankind. Mankind creates superior A.I. lifeforms which aspired to improve themselves. In time, mankind no longer exist, and the A.I. beings continue to evolve.
Eventual a race of super-powerful, super-intelligent A.l. beings create the ultimate improvement.
They create God.
Wild idea, eh? _________________ ____________
