Let's Create a Sequel!
________________________________
~ A Question for the Members: Since Tobor proved that he was capable of piloting a rocket in the movie's final scene, would a movie with him as the pilot/navigator on a mission to Mars be an exciting idea for a sequel?
~ Here's what I came up with.: Imagine a spacecraft on its way to Mars, manned by a combination of humans and robots. One of the robots is Tobor —
__________
— and the other one is similar to the Mars rovers, but well articulated with several arms and (like the new-improved Tobor I created above) is capable of speech!
The mission is to investigate photographic evidence of artificial structures on the surface of Mars . . . but not ancient ruins that would indicate the presence of a lost Martian civilization! These structures were recently built! A series of transparent domes contain cultivated areas.
Are they part of a secret Russian colony on Mars? Or were they constructed by Martians who have been living under the planet's surface and who have now reemerged?
Actually it turns out to be neither! They're aliens from another star system! In a sense, they've invaded Mars!
The human/robot crew of the Mars mission have to establish communications with the aliens and determine if they're a threat to Earth.
That's all I've got so far. I'm hoping some of you guys will have fun adding new elements to the story. _________________ ____________

Well it would be necessary to discern if the occupying aliens are hostile to humanity or not. For adventure sake, they are hostile and Tobar has to infiltrate their ranks pretending to be a dumb observational machine, but in reality is probing for their weakness. |

Morbius, you've done it again! This is exactly the kind of thinking I was hoping for.
Your idea is very imaginative and very interesting. I hope a few more members will add their own thoughts to the concept you've proposed.
Thanks! _________________ ____________

How about if Tobor is sent to Mars to explore and after a while, contact is lost.
Meanwhile, back on Earth, a second Tobor, with the power of speech is being finished.
Mars Tobor unexpectedly returns to Earth but has been reprogrammed by the Martians to sabotage our space program and soon goes on a destructive rampage leading to...
THE BATTLE OF THE TOBORS! Two big robots locked in combat! Which will come out on top?!
I'd have crapped myself with excitement to see that as a kid.
Though, honestly, at my age that's still a possibility _________________ "Have you never wondered what it would be like to walk between the ticks and tocks of Time?" |

Great concept, Tim!
When you said "two big robots locked in combat" I instantly thought of a variation on your idea. Suppose the Martians build a huge robot using technology the stole from the Tobor they captured and disassembled.
They plan to send it to Earth so it can destroy our Space Port and all the ships we're preparing to explore the solar system.
But the Tobor on Mars is reassembled by a secret group of Martians who hope to establish peaceful relations with Earth, and they allow Tobor to steal a ship so he can return to Earth and warn mankind.
They also "upgrade" Tobor by giving him the ability to speak, as well as a database which includes info about the Martian Warbot so that we can defeat it.
While the Martian ship which carries the Martian Warbot is headed for Earth, Tobor transmits the plans for an Earth Warbot which will be able to defeat the Killer Bot from the Red Planet! _________________ ____________

What if Tobor fell madly in love with the Oportunity Rover ? And then he cheats on it with Viking I because he goes for older women! _________________ There comes a time, thief, when gold loses its lustre, and the gems cease to sparkle, and the throne room becomes a prison; and all that is left is a father's love for his child. |

Or maybe the Martians modify Tobor into their own weaponized robot to spearhead their attack on Earth.
The now evil NeoTobor leads a fleet of Martian saucers as they attack mankind! Panic! Death! Explosions! Wartime stock footage! All in a limited-budget-conscious special effects bonanza!
In the end, they could be defeated by "Gadge" appealing to NeoTobor's better nature, which is still buried under all of the weapons and new programming. Reformed NeoTobor turns on his new Martian masters and wipes them out.
Then the scientists decide that we must be prepared against further Martian aggression and plan to use the weaponry they'll remove from NeoTobor to build an army of more advanced robots to defend the Earth in future.
Gadge and NeoTobor, upon hearing the plan, fear that such technology could (and likely would) be stolen and used by 'unfriendly foreign governments' to mount an all-out robot war. So NeoTobor opts to self destruct, with Gadge explaining that "War and continued violence is never the answer". Warm-and-fuzzy 1950s ending leaving the possibility that a new Tobor could always be built.
Hope you didn't get too sticky from all of the sap

Good lord, this thread is cracklin' with great ideas!
The image below is a just-for-fun version of NeoTobor, the bigger-and-badder Battlebot which the Martians send against mankind!
__________
I love the copper color. And I think the four-eyed evil-robot face came out rather well.
I love Tim's idea that NeoTobor is "turned from the Dark Side" by Gadge. My original suggestion above was prompted by my desire to keep Tobor's "good guy" status. But having him become corrupted by the Martians — and then "redeemed" by the kid — is even better! _________________ ____________

It seemed like an appropriate ending for the 'hopeful, looking to the future' world of the 1950s. _________________ "Have you never wondered what it would be like to walk between the ticks and tocks of Time?" |

Thanks, Tim! If you liked that . . . you'll loved this!
While we're delving into the Wonderful World of Parallel Universe 1950s Sequels, why not do something which no fifties sci-fi movie ever did.
A story in which TWO planets team up to invade Earth!
Suppose the Venusians from Target Earth allied themselves with the Martians, and they both sent an army WarBots to conquer the prime real estate in the solar system known as Earth. In that movie, the Venusians sent a small robot invasion force, but it failed because their technology was not advanced enough.
So, the Venusians team up with the Martians, and they share their technology so that their second invasion with their new allies would succeed. Here's what the new improved Venusian RoboSoldiers look like.
Notice the similar copper color as the Martian robots shown above, indicating that some new alloy the Martians and the Venusians developed was used in both designs.
____________
_______
Think of this interplanetary war as being similar to World War II, in which America fought a war on two fronts — the Germans on one side and the Japanese on the other.
Damn, what a wild idea! George Pal would have loved it. _________________ ____________

Ah, come on, guys! Give me a little feedback!
I'm certain that All Sci-Fi has intelligent members who appreciate the way I took Tobor's wimpy physique and gave him a pair of manly shoulders — along with a "tough guy" stance which shows that he's got a pair of shiny ball barrings down there where it counts!
MY version looks tough and macho — like he could kick Gort's ass!
And after doing that, he could walk into a "robot singles bar" and pick up a hot chick like the one below . . . quicker than you could say "This Robotrix could tighten my nuts anytime she wants!"
I also gave Tobor a stylish make-over which enhances his physique from head-to-toe, putting some real pizazz into his chassis!
__________
Gentlemen, I promise I'm not complaining.
I'm just encouraging my loyal associates to share their opinions about the images which I had so much fun creating with Paint.net to jazz up this beloved robot!
Seriously, guys . . . would it kill ya to reply with something like "Great job, Bud!" — or — "How the heck did you DO this?"
To which I would humbly say, "Ah shucks, folks. Twart nothin'." _________________ ____________

The beefier Torbor looks like a rough, tough dude. Good job, Bruce. You did the opposite of what Marvel did with Iron Man. In the first few issues of IM, his armor is this big, blocky intimidating size. Then, they slimmed & trimmed him down with a much more streamlined appearance.
For some reason, I've noticed that many artists like to go in that direction. Be it a spaceship, futuristic jets, autos, submarines, weapons, whatever, if it starts out as something with bulk, artists want to sleek it down. Now sometimes this works fine with certain objects. Sleeker can be better. However, not always. But the pull to streamline objects apparently is just too hard to resist. |

Thanks, Power Man!
You've disproved the old saying which states, "A prophet has no honor on his own message board."
Frankly I was amazed by how much better Tobor looked with his proportions greatly modified! Normally I like robots that are sleek and streamlined . . . like this one.
It's interesting that a "female" robot is appealing if she's lean and sultry . . .but a "male" robot needs wide shoulders, narrow hips, and other macho features.
That's what I had in mind when I drew this.

I honestly prefer the original concept art for Tobor over what we got. The head on the costume was way too big. I know why they did it, but it looks weird to me.
I don't think it would take too much clean-up to make the concept art more appealing, especially the second, beefier version.

Ask and ye shall receive!
Actually, this first restored picture below was done by me back in 2016 for a post on page 2 of the Tobor The Great thread.
That thread also includes the second piece of concept art, but until today I'd never bother to restore it because I didn't like the design. However, I spent an hour today restoring it to the condition you see in the second image below.
__________
As I stated, I like the first drawing above by Scognamillo — but I don't care much for the second one.
The torso is too broad-shouldered, the "bell bottom" legs don't appeal to me, and.he doesn't have "hips" — he appears to be wearing a pleated cheerleader skirt!
And that big "punch bowl" his head sits in is a feature that was also used in the suit. I dislike that part of the design as well. I minimized that somewhat in my redesigned version, along with other changes.
However the drawing itself looks better with the area around the figure cleaned up. Thanks for offering me the challenge of fixing it.
