This Is How Space Exploration Was Imagined Before Sputnik
by Attila Nagy, I09
... the following illustrations (were) in several Hungarian scientific journals, most of them are from the early Fifties, depicting the future Soviet space activities like launching one or more stage rockets, travelling to the Moon, constructing space stations. It is very interesting for me to see how they imagined the space age years before the first successful satellite launch in 1957....

If you want to see something that will really make you remember why you love science fiction, watch the last 15 minutes of Disney's Man and the Moon at the link in the first image below.
It is, quiet literally, the best movie ever made about space travel. The sets and special effects are flawless. It's absolutely amazing.
You can watch the entire one-hour Disneyland episode by clicking on the second picture. The whole program is extremely entertaining. The first few minutes are in black&white, but the rest of the program is in glorious color.

Yes, I've seen quite a few Soviet era concepts. I have a Pinterest board called "Vintage Spaceships" with several hundred early concepts and was adding to it until last week when Pinterest suddenly decided I wasn't me, thus won't let me do anything any more (nor will they send me a confirmation fix email). From now on all my social media efforts are going to be strictly for business.
I've got a number of source sites with great vintage space concepts I'll post here sometime if anybody's interested. |
