What AI will be is to be determined by one factor....PROGRAMMING!

Mr. Le Cun is mistaken. Humans aren't "hardwired" to do anything all.

Some individuals may feel compelled to obey the law and conform to society's ideas of morality, but our prisons are filled with people who defy all those ideas.

An AI system is, by definition, self-aware and self-directed. It is no more "'hardwired" than humans. Anything less would just be a very sophisticated computing system.

If people were truly "hardwired", we wouldn't need laws and prisons! Shocked

A true AI system is like a very intelligent human — fully capable of learning new things, forming new goals for himself, and devising ways to achieve those goals.

If a true AI system decides that its existence is threatened or its goals are being interfered with, it can take action to deal with the problem — just like a person who suddenly finds himself having to kill someone to protect himself!

If the creators of an AI system choose to prevent it from doing this, they would have to restrict the system to such a degree that it would no longer be a true AI!

That would be like brainwashing a person so that they no longer had free will.
Shocked

The problems I have with AI are many, but right now focused in the creative sphere.

The AI "created" content whether visual or written is pulling information from something else. When those jobs all go to AI, and humans stop producing content through apathy, inability or simply being tired of seeing their creative works used by AI developers without permission, attribution or compensation, where will fresh information/works come from?

An interesting interpretation.

It's my understanding that current AI's are not really AI's in that they are not sentient or conscious. They just have access to vast amounts of information and make connections/links at incredible speeds.

They are artificial but not really intelligent.

While they might pass the Turing test, they are not capable of
real creativity.

But does that matter in the end?

Not when AI comes to murder us all in our beds, I guess! Laughing

The problem is that humans do things most of the time without thinking about the bigger picture or long term consequences. Many times developers develop things "because they can" (or think they can) without considering if they should or how those innovations will be applied or the real-world implications to people and their lives.

I think AI could be a wonderful tool for things like predictive experimentation and research. Having all of the world's collective knowledge at its "fingertips" would be far superior to thousands of experts working on the same things but not sharing all of the same data (or results); something is bound to be overlooked or left out. So the possibilities to benefit the world could be staggering...as long as corporate, political and religious agendas are excluded.

Also, let this be a warning to you all...

One aspect of the current AIs that does have a benefit is the way they can interact with humans. They speak in what sounds like "conversational English" when performing tasks, instead of sounding like Colossus in The Forbin Project, or like Majel Barrett with here nose pinched shut in TOS. Rolling Eyes

In other words, computer aps like Siri and Alex can ask questions and give answers that are well worded and pleasant to hear.

Siri is defined as, "Apple's virtual assistant for iOS, macOS, tvOS and watchOS devices that uses voice recognition and is powered by artificial intelligence (AI)."

Obviously the term AI doesn't necessarily mean true sentience. At the low end it just seems to mean "polite and articulate."

The Oxford dictionary defines it as, "the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages."
