Believe it or not, Starlog did an article about the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special! It has a full page article with three pages of photos. Shocked

The "high quality" version somebody posted on YouTube a few years ago is still available (the one I downloaded for purely nostalgic reasons), so you guys can watch it and read the article below while you marvel at the way America was so Star Wars crazy back in 1978 that we gathered around our family's big 25" TVs and watched this odd network program while wearing big happy grins! Very Happy

Bear in mind that this was the first time we got to see scenes and characters from Star Wars on our televisions, and this experience (along with the John Williams music) was quit a rush!

Back in 1978, this crazy network special wasn't hated by Star Wars fans . . . it was adored by the entire country! That's why Starlog put it on the cover of this issue. The article was a major selling point for the magazine!

The article's opening sentence says, "Last month CBS aired one of the most ambitious television spectacles ever attempt, the The Star Wars Holiday Special."

Obviously the Starlog folks were impressed by this program, and they assumed everyone else was too!

I well remember when this was shown on network TV! I unfortunately had to work the night it was on and didn't have a VCR so I only got to see brief bits of it (I was managing a department store in Ohio at the time and got to see fleeting bits of it on our display televisions.).

However, my 9 year old son got to view it on our home TV and I eagerly wanted to hear his take on it. He loved it! Obviously the programing was designed for the "Saturday morning Puff'n'stuff" crowd.

When I finally had the opportunity to see it I was on one hand disappointed and on the other fascinated! It was SO bad but serves as a perfect example of how Hollywood hacks can turn a silk purse into a sow's ear!

Saw this on TV with my kid sister while eating dinner on TV trays. We didn't fuss over it because it reminded us of The Muppet Show, but we tuned out 30 min in.

Gosh, ralfy, you missed some of the good parts! (Yes, there were a few.)

Dyna Carrol sang a sexy song in a sexy outfit. Famed funny man Art Carney did his "Ed Norton" routine as well as he ever did with Jackie Gleason. The Star War cartoon is located at the about the one hour mark. Harvey Corman (from the Carol Burnett Show) has a comedy routine not long after that.

In other words, this infamous program did have a few good moments. Very Happy

Like millions of other Star Wars fans, my enthusiasm for Star Wars was so intense in 1979 that I actually didn't hate this when it first aired.

At that time, there weren't even any bootleg video tapes of Star Wars yet, so this gave us a chance to see the stars, the props, and the special effects.

And I think the very fact that the Holiday Special was so hokey (in a childlike way) demonstrates how our culture has change in the decades since it aired.
