Master kitbasher John Payne (who I'm sure some of you are familiar with) did something a bit like that with AMT's AMTronic model kit.

That is a way cool shuttle! It would have been horrendously expensive as a prop for a TV series, unfortunately. The accountants like to have flat surfaces and facets that can be cut from sheets of plywood.

The outer skin of the full-size Galileo shuttlecraft was mostly Masonite (particle board) attached to a structural steel framework. In fact, the recent restoration of the studio mockup was done by a company whose usual business is building, repairing and restoring classic wooden boats.

The excerpts from two earlier posts on this thread present awesome arguments against the lack of robots on TOS.

. . . one of the issues about the Enterprise was the complete absence of robots.

In an age of warp drive & transporter systems you have got believe that robotics would be equally advanced & an absolute necessity in space exploration.

. . . no matter how you slice it, asking an audience to buy into star ships that travel faster than the speed of light, have advanced weaponry systems, and can scramble molecules of humans but lack any robotics on the same ship is astonishingly inane.

Gene Roddenberry didn't want robots on the show because he thought that like with rockets it was too space opera.

The Enterprise obviously had may automated systems, but like Butch pointed out, not having robots keeps the crew occupied. The U.S. Navy has actually remove automated system from their vessels. They feel that people can handle the situations better than automated systems, can handle the unexpected better, they are more flexible in situations, and it keeps the crew occupied.

It wouldn't matter if TOS Enterprise had seatbelts. The chairs swivel and, except for the Captain's chair, are not attached to the deck! All that would happen is that you would be strapped into a chair that is lying on it's side after being whipped around like in a carnival ride.

Transporter Room Upgrades.

Alternative exit should be available.

Engineering tools locker should be located in the transporter room in order for any emergency repairs required for either the transporter console or pad.

Transporter console can only be accessed via DNA scan of designated crew members.

Phasers should be stored and ready for use in the transporter console should an operator be in need of weapons. The console could have a bottom section that drops down with the phasers readily available.

In the episode "Assignment:Earth" we see Kirk in the transporter room having to order ship security to the scene when they encounter the mysterious Gary Seven who has accidentally beamed on board.

Having phasers immediately available within the transporter room would eliminate the wait time for security to arrive.

A force field should be in place that can be activated around the transport pad to restrain individuals from exiting the pad.

Either the transport console or bulkhead sensors should be able to scan individuals or objects as to determine they are who or what they claim to be.

This would be a sophisticated viewer recognition and identification protocol.

There should be storage for medical gear in case of an emergency if any injured crew required immediate attention before they could be taken to sickbay.
Gurneys could be also stored in the transporter room.

One or more transporter rooms should be located as closely as possible to sickbay for emergency medical situations.

Tricorders and communicators could also be stored in the transporter room.
These would be for the landing party (along with the phasers also stored there that I previously mentioned).

The tricorders could also be utilized in the transporter room itself should anyone or anything beaming aboard need to be examined.

Communicaters could possibly be used in case shipboard contact be lost for any reason.
The communicators would allow crew to contact other crew on board the ship who would also be using their communicators.

Fresh uniforms & boots should be stored there if the ones worn are contaminated.

In the episode "The Naked Time" we see that the transporter room has a decontamination mechanism.

It seems though that clothing and equipment could still possibly be infected by unknown alien substances.
It would make sense to have a way to have uniforms, boots and equipment evaporated.

A further security measure could have the transporter ceiling and pad revolve leaving only a blank ceiling and pad in place.
