This is a Jim-dandy miniseries, with terrific special effects and high production values. It was made as a companion piece for The Right Stuff and Apollo 13, which is why it begins at about the point The Right Stuff left off, and it doesn't dwell on Apollo 13 very long.

It does, however, do a fine job of portraying the missions prior to Apollo 11 all the problems that had to be solved before a Moon landing was attempted.

One of the best parts of the miniseries deals with the heroic efforts of the Gruman Aircraft company to design and build the Lunar Excursion Module. It's presented in a very entertaining and informative manner.

The segment of the miniseries that shows the first flight tests of the LEM are surprisingly moving, and it contains some breathtaking special effects. This is a wonderful series for people who feel strongly about the NASA space program from the 1960s.

In real life, people in those days didn't dwell on anything very long. They just got on with the job. Be it Apollo 1 or 13...there was a job to do and a goal to reach.

In the 1960's, America was run by a generation that had fought in WWII and they didn't stop to navel gaze and cry into their beer every time they had a problem. Crap happens and everybody carries on. If I recall correctly, the Apollo 1 fire was in 1967 and Apollo 8 orbited the moon in 1968. As we learned from the Space Shuttle, when modern generations face a problem, everything gets shut down for YEARS while people point fingers.

I have the miniseries on DVD and would love to have it on BD. Space adventures cry out for high definition and surround sound. I concur with your comments about the Lunar Module development representing a high point of the series.

You misunderstood my commnet, Brent.

I meant that the miniseries itself didn't spend much time on Apollo 13 because the movie (which was directed by Ron Howard, who was also one of the producers of From the Earth to the Moon) covered that event in NASA history very well, so there was no need to present it again in the miniseries.

Well, color me embarrassed, folks — I was wrong. I've been watching From the Earth to the Moon, and my memory of the miniseries is apparently a bit flawed.

Contrary to what I stated above, the series does in fact have one entire 60-minute segment devoted to Apollo 13.

What they do not show are any scenes of actors playing the three astronauts aboard the spacecraft, something which many the other segments have an abundance of. The series let the movie, Apollo 13, show us what happened in mission control and aboard the spacecraft.

The segment focuses instead on the way the media fought over what to report and what not to report.

Watch this 7 minute video about the Soviet lunar landing and their spacesuit design. It would seem that the Soviets didn't have much luck with their space program, although they did have some impressive designs for their space vehicles.
Very Happy

And this 2nd video uses excellent CGI to illustrate the Soviet vehicles they planned to use for the lunar missions.
