|
|
I occassionally frequent a Canadian car forum which has a topic similar to this thread that I'm starting.
I think this is a lot fun and I don't care if NOBODY else makes a post...I'm gonna keep posting because I enjoy this!!
We've all heard the BIG music stars and all the BIG songs. But, much like my taste in movies, I get a kick out of the smaller stuff...the forgotten stars, one-hit wonders or maybe big stars but songs that didn't quite hit it.
I LOVE the singer in this video. She has a gorgeous, pitch perfect low voice. In the early 1960's, teenage Helen Shapiro was a sensation in her native England...but she never made it on this side of the pond. Her star faded as styles changed in the mid 60's. Expect me to post a few Helen Shapiro songs.
When she was at the top of her game, she toured with her opening act...four forgettable schmoes from Liverpool.
Here she is on a British TV show with 3 of the 4 lads who opened for her (the 4th member is present...but had appeared in a sketch on the show earlier so he doesn't appear in this video).

Ignore the singer in the following video.
It's Dee Dee Sharp singing MASHED POTATO TIME.
Big deal. Instead, observe the 5' 10" blonde Deanna Mollner dancing just behind Dee Dee. Experts regard this performance by Deanna Mollner as the FINEST example of the notoriously hard MASHED POTATO dance ever performed. While the other dancers jump around in no particular pattern, Miss Mollner completes a textbook perfect example of THE MASHED POTATO.

I can tell I'll be hangin' around this thread a lot.
Since you expanded the topic to dancing, Brent, permit me to add a link to another video I happened upon serendipitously while watching the one you posted:

Helen's voice can serenade me all night.
If I tried dancing like that I would dislocate a hip. |

Hey, that's the plan...I hope people will add links to any music with hearing OR SEEING.
Now... you want to see bad dancing?
I present some of the WORST dancing ever committed to video. Remember that episode of SEINFELD with Eleaine dancing? She has nothing on the folks here.
Petula Clark is one of the most elegant singers EVER. Here, she has the great misfortune of singing in front of what appears to be a tribe of rythmically challenged (albeit, well-dressed) Neanderthals.

I interrupt our regularly scheduled thread for some Canadian content.
A lot of Canadians made it big in the U.S....Paul Anka, Hank Snow, my great aunt Gisele MacKenzie (for those over 70).
Some didn't make it big but they made some catchy music.
No "video" here but music worth hearing.
THE BEAU-MARKS. A group actually named after the BOMARC long range ground to air missile:

Yeah...sorry about Bieber but we aren't taking him back.
Gisele MacKenzie and Perry Como sing a tribute to Gisele's hometown (and mine):

OK, one last blast of Canadian content.
The very talented Patsy Gallant. This was a actually a song from my era when Crazy Legs Disco Gair ruled the dance floor (maybe I just made up that last part).

Here's a pair of songs for the "dumped".
In my experience, being dumped generates two distinct types of song. This is just a general observation not precipitated any particular incident (but, yeah, I'm takin' about you, Susan)
First is the sad "My heart is broken" type of song as we see in this example from Peter and Gordon.
http://youtu.be/HB6l4i-zA_Q
Next is the screw-you "I never needed you anyway" song as we hear from teen heart throb Bobby Sherman.

I discovered the country/rockabilly/r&b singer Joyce Harris thanks to YouTube. Why didn't this woman become more famous?

From the sublime to the ridiculous: Mamie Van Doren singing a Paul Anka-penned rock ditty while taking a shower. That has to be her own voice -- no studio would dub in a voice that bad.

In case anyone's interested, the beautiful Gazzarri Dancers who danced on the short-lived pop music program Hollywood a Go Go have an entire website dedicated to them.

To be fair, those guys and gals look like typical clubgoers, not professional dancers. In other words, they got no rhythm! |

You, too, eh? I must say that my wife-at-the-time and I managed to clear the dance floor more than once in the age of disco. Nowadays I sing karaoke three nights a week, including many of the tunes we're talking about here.

I'm sure glad I'm not in the dating game anymore. Here's one very popular piece among the young ladies at karaoke (even rivaling Patsy Cline's "Crazy"), which would cause me no end of concern.

Wow...she is good.
I often asked the same question, "Why isn't (fill in the blank) more famous?".
But, when I hear people tell their stories, I think that a LOT of it comes down to chance and circumstance.
Example: Lesley Gore.
Now, I have to say that good singers are a dime a dozen (this from a guy who can't sing a note). For an average "girl singer" like Lesley Gore to move to the front of the line, she needed the stars to align. First, her record producer was Quincy Jones. Second, she released IT'S MY PARTY first (it was being recorded by a girl group who's name escapes me)
Without Qunicy Jones and IT'S MY PARTY, Lesley Gore is another Joyce Harris.
Now... Lesley Gore.
One of the things I find interesting about Lesley Gore is the way she quickly moved from one persona to the next.
Here she is singing YOUNG LOVE as a demure, girl-next-door.
http://youtu.be/VVNyO9G5Cvc?t=23s
Bur here she is singing YOU DON'T OWN me; looking and sounding like a girl who could do serious damage to your face and other parts of your anatomy.

Now with visual aids!
I figured out how to get my old imageshack pics so I can add some teasers.
In my younger days, I was BIG into cruzin'. Back then, not all cars had airconditioning and we cruzers could drive around with our windows rolled down; holding conversations while trying not to hit anything (not always succesfully...my buddy and I rear-ended a motorcycle while driving a hopped-up old Camaro)
In 1983-84, I was at my peak with a super cool car and a super hot girl.
I still have the car. It's not roadworthy...I've been rebuilding it for longer than I can remember. The girl and I had a parting of the ways...she married someone else but, in an odd twist of fate, she moved back to the neighbourhood (with her husband) a few years ago and I see her quite often. She's still hot, and she is as nice as ever (she brought me a cupcake on Halloween and gave me some books to read during my recovery from recent surgery).
So, this means...CAR SONGS.
The Hondells and HOT ROD HIGH. A great car song that sorta' got lost over the years. Love the guy playing the melodica (I suspect the real music is coming from an organ and the melodica is just a prop...but you don't see them played very often).
http://youtu.be/Vgak2Pp5k9I?t=43s
Next, Jan & Dean. I loved these guys. This is one of my top 5 favorite cruzing songs. In this video, a pre-recorded track is substituted for their live performance...which is a good thing because Jan always botched the lyrics when they sang live.
http://youtu.be/iQIE-W4-JPs?t=24s
Perhaps my favorite movie of all time BEACH PARTY. I used to tell people, "My goal in life is drive a cool car with a surfbord in the back, a pretty girl beside me...and have people call me The Big Kahuna".
http://youtu.be/xbq_aVG7DCk?t=7s
When Beach Party premiered at the Garrick Theater in Winnipeg, Frankie Avalon and Annetter Funicello were in attendence. The movie was written by Winnipegger Lou Rusoff. After all, if you want a movie about surfing, who better to write it than a guy from the Canadian prairie?
Finally, this isn't a car song...it's a cruzin' song. On a hot summer night, when you pull up to a stoplight in your convertible, this is what you want people to hear coming from your AM radio.
