Imagine "One Million B.C." (1940) with fewer dinosaurs but more pretty girls.

Presto! "Prehistoric Women". And of course tradition demands that none of the characters speak English.

Trivia note: Only two out the six "prehistoric" movies ever made allows the characters to speak English — one of which is the 1967 Hammer production, "Prehistoric Women".

At least this seldom-scene 1950 production provides a narrator to tell us interesting things about evolution that our school text books neglected.

The plot is so easy to understand, a caveman can do it: An oversized prehistoric fella develops an interest in Mara Lynn and Luarette Luez, the principle females. (This was eons before subplots were invented.)

Directed by Greg Tallas. This is a recommended second feature for "Mesa of Lost Women" for obvious reasons. And Allan Nixon stars in both films!

I suppose this one can be looked upon as a follow-up to the famous One Million BC (1940), though without any dinosaurs — which makes this more accurate.

The story concentrates on a small tribe of females from prehistory, perhaps intended as the precursors to the later Amazons.

A short flashback near the beginning reveals how a group of women & children broke off from the males in a tribe about 15 years earlier. In the present, they encounter new males, mostly a handsome guy named Engor. They make him their prisoner, but he ends up helping them.

There aren't any prehistoric monsters — animal threats involve tigers, black panthers and an elephant, though there is some winged creature which is glimpsed as merely a typical bird.

There's also a semi-legendary 9-foot tall creature called the Wadi or Gwadi, which is just a giant of a man whom everyone fears (with good reason — he's a vicious killer). The women defend themselves using rock-slings, spears and clubs.

There's a melodramatic narration, since the characters do not speak English, only occasional one-word remarks or grunts. Surprisingly, this is in color. The nighttime scenes are too dark.

Prehistoric Trivia: The giant caveman was played by a real giant, an 8-foot tall circus performer from Iceland.

Hammer Films produced a film with the same title in 1967, also called Slave Girls, though some film fans do not regard it as a remake.

I was amused by the comment about this movie from IMDB member KennethEagleSpirit (click to see his other user comments).

He has the right attitude towards this somber historical documentary.

Comparable, I think, to Wiesmuller's Tarzan flicks, Prehistoric Women is honestly kind of good. The voice over, done documentary style, helps.

The segments done with stuffed animals are hilarious by todays standards. Its like Tarzan wrestles Lavern and Shirley's BooBoo kitty.

The prehistoric women? Champions of women's liberation and really pretty both at the same time.

The photography? Decent given what they had to work with back then.

The plot? Hey, there actually IS one. Even a sub plot. Characters? They function. Especially the nine foot tall rampaging giant, who is so obviously misunderstood. I'm kidding.

But I'm NOT kidding when I say that if you like Tarzan style flicks from that era you'll enjoy Prehistoric Women.
