Phil Broad! Yes, thank you for the name. I really miss his site, maybe it will come back, it has before. You are probably right about him telling a story he heard. It has been a few years since I read about the Proteus.

The makers of this film would like to belatedly acknowledge their debt to Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea -- especially the first twenty minutes or so. They would also like to apologize for the Skipper's inability to say anything but "Right". Finally, they regret the expansive amount the clothing kept on Raquel Welch throughout the picture, though they do point out the fact that everyone is in skin-tight bodysuits so that she will be in one as well.
Cheesy. Psychedelic. Sometimes silly and dull. But it's also imaginative and beautiful - especially the sequence in the lungs. The white blood cell and antibodies are suitably creepy. And the suspense builds decently, even if the ending is rushed.

I feel compelled to award an EDCA for the mental image inspired by Stephen Boyd's comment on the abbreviation.
I stared off into space for a full fifteen seconds, visualizing delinquent females being consolidated and mobilized.
In that order.

That is the only serious role I remember ever seeing him in. It was while watching "A New Leaf" that I realized that I had seen him in FV. He is hilarious in ANL as the lawyer trying, with little success, to explain to Walter Matthau's character that he has no money.

Which, for some unfathomable reason, Isaac Asimov saw fit to change in his novelization. Asimov has Grant speculating that CMDF might possibly stand for Consolidated Martian Dimwits and Fools -- which is much less humorous.
Asimov knew from science, but he didn't know from funny.

An interesting concept: Since both the Nautilus of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (Disney 1954) and U9-1035 Proteus from Fantastic Voyage (20th Century Fox 1966) were both designed by Harper Goff; what would the Proteus look like as a "Nemo design"? Perhaps this that I found posted on Nautilus Submarine answers the question!
