Phileas Fogg III, great-grandson of Jules Verne's bold British adventurer, makes the same gentleman's wager that his famous ancestor made.
And instead of having just one loyal-and-eccentric servant who accompanies him around the world, Fogg III has three servants,
Guess who?
As Stooge movies go, this world-hopping bit of slap-stick is relatively enjoyable. Emil Sitka ("The Three Stooges in Orbit") and Joan Freeman co-star. Produced and directed by Moe's son-in-law, Norman Mauer. _________________ ____________

Here's a pleasant video by Mick Garris from Trailers From Hell, in which he shares his boyhood memories of seeing this movie and attending a promotional appearance by the famous trio.
The second video is the full movie with good picture quality!

I haven't seen this film in years, Bud, but exactly what science-fiction elements does it possess?
I realize that the film is loosely based about famed s-f author Jules Verne's classic "Around the World in Eighty Days." But does the Verne novel have any s-f elements to it, I'm not sure? |

That's a good question, Mike!
I guess I tend to put every version of a Jules Verne story into our sci-fi forums, even when they aren't strictly "science fiction".
But since I've placed Around the World in 80 Days (1956) in a sci-fi forum (along with the more recent remake), I'm stuck with the idea that all versions of this Jules Verne tale somehow qualify!
My feeling is that any story which springs from the mind of a famous man who was dedicated to scientific advancement must itself have a sci-fi soul — and thus the story deserves a place in the appropriate All Sci-Fi forum.
After all, travelimg around the world in less then three months in those days required intelligence, logic, careful planning, and ingenuity!
Those are all qualities which have served the noble concept of scientific advancement. Therefore, we can equate the challenge of making an 80-day trip around the world back then to the challenge of putting men on the Moon in the 20th Century!
Both task have now been accomplished. But in the past, both were "science fiction".

When I first posted the Apollo/Destination Moon image above, Wayne pointed out the light source in the two photos I combined were from opposite directions!
So, I had to start all over and flip the one from Destination Moon to fix the error. _________________ ____________

Would the wind-powered sledge be sf enough?
I know wind-powered, wheeled vehicles existed, but not sure about a sledge, especially for long-distance travel. _________________ "Have you never wondered what it would be like to walk between the ticks and tocks of Time?" |

YouTube has the full movie with a fairly good picture.
I skipped around a bit, trying to find the "wind powered sledge" Tim mentioned, but I couldn't locate it.

I've wondered just for fun what the next Three Stooges film might have been had they been able to make more movies after their final one: "The Outlaws Is Coming"?
Have Rocket Will Travel, Meet Hercules, and In Orbit covered the science fiction genre. Snow White dealt with storybook fantasy. Outlaws spoofed westerns as they had done several times before in their Stooges Colombia shorts. In a Daze was a travel adventure film based on the classic Jules Verne book.
So what was left for them? Spy genre, meet monsters as Abbott & Costello did in a number of their movies, a jungle picture, detectives, some historical event? What formula would you have used? More science fiction? I avoided the war genre due to the increasing unpopularity of the Vietnam War with Americans at that time. So a war movie, even setting it in another historical era, would not have been the wisest way to go for them.

The wind-powered sledge is in the original Verne novel. I was commenting on the 'is it SF or not' part of the conversation. I should have been clearer; my bad. _________________ "Have you never wondered what it would be like to walk between the ticks and tocks of Time?" |

Not at all, sir. It was my fault.
I knew about the wind-powered railroad handcar from the 1950s movie, so I thought perhaps the Stooges' movie had done a variation on that.
However, a moment ago I Googled "Around the World in 80 Days novel" and quickly found this on Wikipedia.

Passepartout is kidnapped by the Indian warriors. Fogg rescues him after American soldiers volunteer to help. They continue by a wind-powered sledge to Omaha, where they get a train to New York.

So, that's obviously what I should have done yesterday and saved myself the time I spent scanning through the Stooge's movie.
