. . .
aka: The Haunted Spaceship
This movie was as much horror as sci-fi. That's because equipping a spaceship with a gravity drive that creates an artificial black hole will, of course, open a gateway to Hell and imbue the ship itself with an evil spirit. Or didn't you know that? Evidently the designers didn't.
But then what would you expect from a ship designed with a Gothic theme, inside and out?
One more question... Why would the corridor (spine) connecting the bridge and engineering need to be severed in eight places for emergency separation? _________________ ...or not...

Yes, it's me! I decided to come back to some of my favorite geeks. Hope you didn't leave a candle in the window for me...
Anyhoo, I thought I'd start by dredging this film out of the archive. I recently developed a liking for this one over Halloween after it was shown a few times. I have a book on underappreciated horror films, and wouldn't you know it, this is prominently featured.
Frankly, I think it doesn't get half the credit it deserves. Most people pan it as "derivative" or as ripping off other films. Well, so what? A LOT of movies do that! It also visits the idea of alternate universes. In '97,that was a bit out there; now, not so much.
I personally think it's a pretty good film, a nice blend of scifi/horror, with (sorry scifi gang) Lovecraftian touches; visions of doom, some unknown force drawing people in, and an unfathomable unseen horror that can drive people mad.
Ordinarily, I'm not fond of blood and guts films like this (I still shut my eyes during some scenes), but overall, I like it.
Anybody else? |

First....WELCOME BACK METROPOLLY!!!! Great to see you back. I always enjoyed seeing your point of view even if I didn't agree....But that's what discussion is all about!
Second, as to EVENT HORIZON I found it very much like a haunted house in space as well.
Keep in mind that H.P. Lovecrafts' own mythos was a blend of dark science fiction where the supernatural elements were the product of elements beyond time and between what we understand as space! That it is looked at as more "supernatural" than science betrays Aurthur C Clarkes' postulate that "Advanced Alien science would look like Magic to our minds!" (I paraphrase!)
Again, Polly, Welcome back! Our candles may have become mere stubs on the window sill but there was always the hint of a flicker! _________________ There comes a time, thief, when gold loses its lustre, and the gems cease to sparkle, and the throne room becomes a prison; and all that is left is a father's love for his child. |

A very interesting concept but I was was a little put off by the execution.
From the documentary Sense of Scale:

There is a movie/TV reviewer called The Critical Drinker, who is Scottish author Will Jordan. In his Critical Drinker After Hours YouTube site he interviewed Emily Booth about working on the movie.
She was hired because she was willing to do nudity, but also was hired to be the woman on the log entries.

It's long, but interesting.

It just occurred to me that actresses who didn't want to do nudity could now just request that they add her knockers with CGI. (Or whatever part the producers wanted to show.}
That would be quite a breakthrough for talented actresses who were flat-chested!

Katharine Ross wore a prosthetic chest at the end of "The Stepford Wives". It was originally made by Dick Smith for an actress in another movie, I don't remember the actress's name. Not the first time that has happened. Supposedly Katharine Ross was pleased with the new look.
