I saw this movie in 1959 and I do NOT remember the scene where a green octopus attacks a woman in a red evening gown. Dang it, I always miss the good stuff when I go for popcorn at the wrong time!

John Carradine (with a wig and a beard) develops a diving bell and sends several people down into the ocean -- down, down, down until they end up inside a . . . frozen cave (?).

The film was released by a studio called "Governor Productions", further proof that politics and Hollywood don't mix. Palatable only to big fans of Phyllis Coates (Lois Lane in the early episodes of the "Superman" TV series) and Robert Clark ("The Man from Planet X", "The Hideous Sun Demon").

Directed by Jerry Warren.

Yep, I remember now — I rode the bus with my buddy Jimmy Harmon to see this one at The East Point Theater in 1959.

I also remember that we weren't overly impressed with it. We must have seen the trailer and thought we were in for a real treat.

Actually, it turned to be just a bit better than I remembered when I saw it again a few years ago. Here's the full movie from YouTube. I just downloaded it.

IMDB has 7 trivia items for this movie, a pretty small numer, but a few of them are interesting.

~ Phyllis Coates accepted the role of Dale Marshall as a favor to director Jerry Warren, who was a former boyfriend; the actress originally cast in the lead couldn't do it and Warren couldn't find anyone else in time.

He convinced Coates to do it by telling her that the film would not be shown in California. However, after it was completed, she found out that Warren did indeed release the film in California, and she was told by at least one studio executive (at Columbia) that the film was so inferior and shoddy that the studio would not be hiring her again.

On top of that, Warren never paid her.

Note from me: Morale of the story: Don't date no-talent film directors — but if you do, don't work them after the breakup!

~ In an interview, star Robert Clarke said that the film's cinematographer is actually a well-known Hollywood cameraman who used the pseudonym "Victor Fisher" so he wouldn't get in trouble with the union for taking a job on this non-union picture.

Note from me: Morale of the story: Don't work on a non-union picture, especially if the director has issues with his former girlfriend that he talked into starring in it!

~ The film remained unreleased for several years until it was put on the bottom of a packaged double feature with another Jerry Warren film, Teenage Zombies (1959).

Note from me: Moral of the story: Don't go see a movie with a crappy second feature, because they're probably both crappy!

~ Brianne Murphy who worked as the dialogue director for the film was married at the time to director Jerry Warren. The two co-owned G.B.M. productions, the company that produced this film.

Note from me: And just how many films did G.B.M. productions make? This one and Teenaged Zombies.
