Wikipedia. In the novel, humanity is gravely affected by a plague which has been spread by bats and mosquitoes.
Wiki: Screenwriter Joyce Corrington holds a doctorate in chemistry, she felt that using biological warfare as the origin of the plague was more suitable for the film adaptation of the novel.

SIDEBAR: I would hazard a guess that Joyce felt altering the cause of the devastating disease seemed more timely and relevant as it addressed a real and serious issue in the world.
Ironically as we live through this horrific and tragic Covid-19 pandemic it isn't bio-warfare we had to worry about.
It was bats

Wiki: The character of Lisa (Rosalind Cash) was created due to the rise of the Black Power movement.
The film crew would travel to the center of the business district early on a Sunday morning to shoot the area as it was relatively devoid of pedestrian movements and moving vehicles. Despite careful planning by the crew, bystanders and cars driving around in the background appear briefly in some scenes.

SIDEBAR: Someone posted that they were suspicious that downtown L.A. would be that deserted. Perhaps. However, remember the film crew was doing this shooting back in 1969 for the movie's 1971 release.
My thinking is that L.A. could have been a different kind of place fifty-three years ago where maybe you could find downtown much less active back them as compared to 2022.

Wiki: Charleton Heston wrote in his autobiography, "In the Arena," that the iconic crucifixion scene was not originally in the script.
Wiki: Heston was a guest on Whoopi Goldberg's talk show when she remarked that his kiss in the movie was one of the first interracial kisses on film. She said that she wished that society could get past relationships being an issue.
With that, Heston leaned over and kissed an unsuspecting Goldberg.
