Interesting news, but I wish one of these suckers would hit the Moon and give it an atmosphere!

 Hey, it's just a thought . . .

A Dazzling Comet is Approaching us! It Will Outshine the Brightest Stars

Wouldn't that be an awesome premise for a SciFi movie though!!

 Excellent suggestion!

Here's an alternate suggestion, based on the idea that the Moon's weak gravity would not hold an atmosphere.

Pretend it's 2085, and we detected a huge approaching comet. We could give it a nudge with our interplanetary mining ships and aim it at the Moon.

When it approaches the Earth / Moon system, other ships would guide it into a lunar orbit and start carving it up into chunks, which would then be transported down to the lunar colony.

The fragments would be processed to extract the elements the contain; water, carbon dioxide, ammonia, methane, hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, silica, and some metals.

These elements would be used to expand and improve the the lunar colony.

According the NASA website, there are billions of comets orbiting our Sun in the Kuiper Belt. A fleet of mining ships, based at several "space cities" which orbit the sun well past Pluto, would locate comets and push them towards the sun so that they could be redirected into orbits around both the Moon and Mars.

The Martian colony is building atmosphere plants as well, to terraform Mars.

If we could give Mars a magnetic field — somehow — to prevent the solar wind from constantlly stripping away the atmosphe, Mars might eventually change from the one shown on left to the terraformed one show on the right.

Once again, this too would make a fantastic movie plot. Terraforming Mars for habitation could make for a tremendous movie if put in the right hands.
