That reminds me of the Dean McLaughlin short novel "Hawk Among the Sparrows," about a modern fighter plane that ended up back in World War I - though of course the X-Wing would have come forward from a long time ago (and a long distance from that far, far away galaxy). As the cover on the isfdb was a bit scruffy, I've just done my own scan of the Analog cover in question:

I like the dramatic composition of the cover art, with that deep perspective on the huge SR-71. Nice. Kelly Freas, I assume?

Freas modified the SR-71 drastically, giving a HUGE vertical stabilizer that the real aircraft doesn't have. It looks great. Very Happy

And the landing gear aren't normal wheels, just snazzy-looking supports, with nothing at all to support the front part of the aircraft.

I didn't notice all this until I found some pictures of the SR-71 to post here. But I couldn't decide which of these two pictures to post. Then I noticed an nteresting difference in the designs.

The one on the top has a separate cockpit window behind the pilot. It's higher, so that the co-pilot can sit behind him and still have an unobstructed view.

The first version doesn't have this feature. Interesting.
