It goes by another name, Custer. Look up the Honor Harrington stories of David Webber. Originally called the Star Kingdom of Manticore it is now The Stellarr Empire of Manticore. The stories are considered "military sc-fi" but are actually a re-telling of the Peninsular and Napoleonic Wars with lots of contemporary politics. Extremely enjoyable! _________________ Common Sense ISN'T Common |

Yes, David Weber has created a great heroine in Honor Harrington... and the enemies, the People's Republic, are very French, of an early nineteenth century variety.
As far as I know the first volume is still a freebie, electronically, in the Baen library... and Image are doing a comics series featuring Honor, though the issues don't seem to be coming out very often recently. |

GMT is only four hours ahead of EST when we're on Daily Savings Time, which we have been since last Sunday. So, we could start the movie at 3:00 EST and it would be 7:00 GMT.
Does that work for you? And does that NOT work for anybody else?
I've about given up expecting a reply to questions iike, "When is a good time for you guys?" So, unless somebody says — "Hey, could we make it at ____ o'clock insead?" — I'll just assume that 3:00 EST on Sunday is good with all the people who are interested, and we'll see who shows up. _________________ ____________

On the Old Defunct Board (which i hereby dub ODB) I posted about the Astra-Gnome car. As a reminder here are the pictures (the first one explains why it is here on the Forbidden Planet thread).
Here is the Wikipedia article URL
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astra-Gnome
And more pictures from the museum (some of which are near duplicates of the pics above):

Due to scheduling conflicts for some of the members who wanted to enjoy this special event, the Forbidden Planet birthday party has been postponed until next Saturday (March 26th) at 3:00 EST.
The enthusiasm for All Sci-Fi's Friday Live Chats has increased over the last few weeks, and I'm sure the Saturday celebration next weekend will attract even more participants than it would have if we'd done it today.
So, we're six days away from touchdown on Altair 4. Come help us wish Forbidden Planet a Happy 60th Birthday next Saturday at 3:00 pm EST / 2:00 CST / 1:00 MST / 12:00 PST.

I'm told that Altaira will be awfully disappointed if you don't participate . . .

Just another cheerful reminder, folks (with a nifty new jpeg I made just for the occasion), that the C-57-D is on final approach to Altair 4, and our special Forbidden Planet Birthday Party is on Saturday at 3:00 EST / 2:00 CST / 1:00 MST / 12:00 PST.
* The planets are from the FX test footage in the bonus features included with DVD/BD, and the saucer is from the last shot in the movie. _________________ ____________

Happy Birthday, Forbidden Planet! I hope to make your party on Saturday. Iconic movie starring Twilight Zone alumni: Anne Francis, Warren Stevens, and Robby T. Robot. |

Shouldn't that be the-other-way-around?
Forbidden Planet was 1956. The Twilight Zone was 1959 to 1964.
(I know. I'm picky about details. Just ask Bud.) _________________ Common Sense ISN'T Common |

Butch said to ask me, so I'll consider myself asked.
Number13 didn't saw they were "former alumni" when they starred in Forbidden Planet, she just said the stars of that film were TZ alumni.
Saying Miss Francis. Mr. Stevens, and Mr. the Robot were alumni of The Twilight Zone doesn't imply that they were on that show before they were in Forbidden Planet. It just means they were on that show during their careers.
And NOW who's picky about detail, eh?

Wow, looks like word of our Saturday celebration has gotten around, and festivities have taken place in other locations!
As for our own birthday gathering on Saturday, the C-57-D has entered high orbit and the crew is making party plans for the event. They're pretty excited, I reckon.
Remember, these guys don't get out much!

________________________________
When you start thinking about this event you realize that some surprising things were done to make it happen.
1. The studio shipped Robby to Las Vegas to show him off in several highly publicized events.
2. They built a float for him to stand on which included a recognizable mock-up of the C-57-D (even if it is rather poorly proportioned).
3. Then they put some guy into Robby and made him actually stand on the moving float — risking the danger of the driver hitting the brakes too hard, sending Robby crashing to the street in front of the float and being run over by it!
The mind boggles . . .
But Robby survived, and the poor nerve-racked operator rebelled and snuck off still wearing the suit, later to be found by the police in a casino, winning large sums of money at various games!
_____________
It was later determined that the man in the suit got his initial funds to use in the games by fraudulently selling the float to this gullible young boy —
_______
— along with a prop from the film that had been on display at the casino.
_______
However, the chargers were dropped when the man's lawyer convinced a judge that the man was not responsible for his actions because he had suffered oxygen deprivation inside the Robby suit.
The studio agreed to drop the matter and avoid the negative publicity. _________________ ____________

LADY IN THE CENTER (THINKING): That bozo just took the dealer's bust card.
ROBBY: Oops . . . Well, math has never been my strong suit. _________________ ...or not...
