______
Four astronauts crash-land on the famous Red Planet and set out to do some exploring. They eventually find the remnants of an extinct civilization and an underground complex with glass-encased Martians in suspended animation.
The explorers discover a room occupied by large clockwork gears where they are addressed by the "Wizard of Mars" (the superimposed head of John Carradine).
John makes a speech about how long the ancient civilization has been gone. Suddenly a Mars-quake makes everything begin to shake, rattle, and roll. The explorers get out just before the quake buries the ruins of the Martian civilization.
Flawed acting and less-than-perfect dialogue hamper this low-budget project. In one scene, a photograph of a subterranean pool in the Carlsbad Caverns is used as the background for a superimposed image of the astronauts sitting in inflatable rafts. The actors pretend to row . . . but they don't move an inch against the background. This goes on for several minutes while the actors utter lines like, "It seems like we've been rowing for hours. When are we going to get out of here?"
I'm sure the audience was asking the same question. _________________ ____________

I can't believe that I remember as much of this movie as I do. The Mars quake was caused because the Martians had the Astronauts restart a clock that had held the Martains out of time. The quake was caused by time restarting.
Recently, I saw a photo of them filming the boat scene, and it actually was filmed in a cave, in Utah I believe. There was no water in the cave, but they did film it in one.

When I first heard of this movie I wondered if it wasn't an Edgar Rice Burroughs Mars series movie. A cross between MASTERMIND OF MARS and WIZARD OF VENUS.
Little did I know it was this piece of fecal material!!
Shame to waste such a cool tittle on this. Seriously, the best part of the movie was the poster! At least they didn't TRIPLE DOG DARE me!

The most memorable (not in a good way) part was, for me, that long-winded philosophical emanation of hot air by Carradine at the end of the movie. |

Good Sir, I humbly stand corrected!
I just checked the YouTube version above, and the astronauts do in fact wander around in an actual cave from the 18:00 to the 25:00 minute marks.
As for the water the rafts supposedly floated in, in all but one shot they apparently just laid the rafts on the floor of the cave (out of frame) and pretended to row while the background never moves and inch!
But when they climb out of the rafts and start walking through the cave we do get a shot of them actually in a pool of water, at the 21:45 mark.

UPDATED JAN 2, 2025 to remove dead links
The print of this film linked here is a later release with a very 70s soundtrack laid on at the start and the end, obliterating some of the dialog. There are other versions of it out there with the Horrors of the Red Planet alternate title where you can see and hear what you're missing.
Wikipedia claims some of it was filmed in what's now Great Basic National Park and Fallon, NV, which just happens to be the town I am in right now. _________________ * * *

The version you posted the link to is the one I used to make screen shots to show I was mistaken when i stated that the cave scenes in the rafts were not actually filmed in the water.
