Sometimes, the most fascinating discoveries are the tiniest. If you're familiar with elementary particle physics, you know how electrons are supposed to be indivisible, but now they've found a new state of matter where they seem to be split (or behave as if they were split) in pairs. This was predicted three-quarters of a century ago but only now have we had the means of creating and measuring such an effect.

Predicted by the great Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac. He formulated the Dirac equation, which describes the behaviour of fermions and predicted the existence of antimatter. Many of his theories were poo-pooed by Albert Einstein who said of him, "This balancing on the dizzying path between genius and madness is awful".

So who has the last laugh now?

By-the-way, Paul was an extremely weird person.

Steven Hawking said that he was the slowest talker in the entire universe: One word per hour!

In 1929, Dirac sailed from America to Japan with Werner Heisenberg. During the trip, Heisenberg spent the evenings dancing while Dirac looked on, puzzled. Eventually Dirac asked his friend why he danced.

Heisenberg replied: "Well, when there are nice girls it is a pleasure to dance."

After thinking for five minutes, Dirac said: "But how do you know beforehand that the girls are nice?"

AND he loved sci-fi and was a member of Pre-Fandom!

(First Fandom was those who first got together and made the first World-Con. Pre-Fandom were those older fans who followed Hugo Gernsback.)
