Strange, somehow I missed that aspect of the character when I was reading all those Bantam reprint paperbacks. |

Although I like the Rock, Doc Savage does not need a remake. |

Although that silly George Pal movie is desperately in need of a remake, Dwayne Johnson is not right for the role for the obvious reasons.

Yeah, Ron Ely, although he looked the part, was too old for the role, and so is the Rock. Doc was suppose to be in his mid to late 20s when the series started. He lied about his age to fight in WWI.

I supposed with the right make-up they can do just about anything these days, eh?

There is a fan-edited version of "The Man of Bronze," the Ron Ely movie, floating around the internet, which cuts out as much as possible of the campy stuff, and adds an introduction to the amazing crew - instead of 112 minutes, it's just under 84, which can't be bad.
Ron Ely must have been about 37 at the time (1975 movie, he was born in 1938) - the events in the movie can't have been set earlier than the mid-thirties, I assume, since the pulp magazine didn't start until 1933. If Clark Savage Jr was active in The Great War, even slightly under-age to begin with, he would have been in his mid-thirties then, surely? |

I don't really know, back in the 70s/80s there were discussions about Doc's age. Someone figured out from info in the pulps that Doc should be in his mid to late 20's with his associates being about ten years older. But even if you figure that Doc signed up in the last year of the war at 15 years of age, he should still be 30 by the start of the pulp series.
When the movie came out, it was reported that they filmed the sequel at the same time, but I have never seen any photos from it. When the movie didn't do well, they never finished the sequel. I wonder what happened to the scenes they filmed.

Checking out Wikipedia for Doc Savage: The Arch Enemy of Evil, their take on the matter is this:
Quote: | Contemporary news accounts indicated that Doc Savage: The Arch Enemy of Evil had been filmed in the Lake Tahoe area simultaneously with the principal photography for the first Doc Savage film. However, due to the poor reception of the first film, Doc Savage: The Arch Enemy of Evil was never completed or released. In an interview conducted in 2014, while he was filming the television movie Expecting Amish, actor Ron Ely stated unequivocally that "no portion of The Arch Enemy of Evil was ever filmed, concurrently with The Man of Bronze or otherwise. That's a total myth." |
I guess Ron would have known...

Possibly the Rock's only acquaintance with the character was by way of George Pal's treatment. _________________ ...or not...

This Man of Bronze definitely needs to be "detarnished"! _________________ ____________
